Munter, Ortmeier sent down; call-ups TBA

The Giants tinkered with their roster after Wednesday's 10-4 loss to St. Louis, sending reliever Scott Munter to Double-A Connecticut and outfielder Daniel Ortmeier to Triple-A Fresno.

And coming to San Francisco? Well, they're still working on that.

Manager Felipe Alou did not announce any corresponding promotions, because he and general manager Brian Sabean did not immediately reach those decisions. They have some time, because the Giants are off today before they open a three-game series Friday night against Colorado.

Munter's season-long struggles continued when he walked three batters, allowed four runs and recorded only one out in relief of Noah Lowry. The Giants sent Munter to Double-A so he can work with pitching coach Bob Stanley, who turned Munter, a 47th-round choice, into an effective sinkerballer.

That sinkerball essentially has abandoned Munter in 2006.

"He's mostly a one-pitch guy, but his sinker is not there," Alou said. "It's off, it's wild. ... We want to see if (Stanley) can get him going, get that sink back."

Ortmeier made his first major-league start of the season Wednesday, in right field, and went 1-for-4. He did not look comfortable on defense, allowing Scott Spiezio's pop-up to fall in short right-center and then retreating tentatively on Albert Pujols' line drive off the wall on back-to-back plays in the third inning.

Alou said the Giants would bring up one pitcher and one position player. He offered no other clues, but pitching possibilities include Merkin Valdez and Jonathan Sanchez, and outfielder Fred Lewis is among the candidates for the other spot.
    From the S.F. Chronicle 5/25/06

It must be wonderful to have so many possibilites to draw from that when you send two players down you still need time to decide who to bring up.We need a closer and a 1B. Earth to Felipe Alou & Brian R. Sabean, get a CLUE!

Haven't followed the minors much so I'll take your word for it. Sounds like Valdez still needs a ton of work...PCL seems the right place for him right now.
