Morris roughed up by former team

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cardinals strongman Albert Pujols slugged a three-run homer in the first inning -- his 23rd blast of the season -- and Juan Encarnacion drove in three runs with a double and a single as St. Louis powered to an 8-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night at AT&T Park.
Losing pitcher Matt Morris (3-5), facing his former Redbirds teammates for the first time, allowed eight hits and six runs (four earned) over six innings, while winner Jason Marquis (6-4) allowed six hits over 8 1/3 innings, including a two-run homer to Randy Winn.

For Pujols, it was his first homer at AT&T Park, hitting it on his 59th career at-bat here.

Giants outfielder Barry Bonds is still at 714 lifetime homers, as he went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.

Lowry starts rubber game for Giants
St. Louis (30-16) at San Francisco (24-22), 12:35 p.m. PT

Noah Lowry had the misfortune of being on the short end of the Giants' 1-0 loss against Oakland last Friday, but still yielded only five hits over six frames and squirmed out of trouble several times.
He'll have to be sharp again when he faces St. Louis on Wednesday at AT&T Park in the finale of the three-game series, for the Redbirds feature right-hander Chris Carpenter, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner.

It will be Lowry's fifth start overall and second career outing against the Cardinals. He took a 4-3 defeat last July 10 at AT&T Park, giving up four runs over seven innings.

Manager Felipe Alou has been cheered lately, as the starters have been going deep in games lately and lead the league in innings pitched. He hopes Lowry will match his teammates' trend.

"You want the starters to keep doing what they're doing," said Alou. "When they pitch well, it adds to the team's confidence."

Lowry has a 20-14 Major League mark over 51 starts in his career with a 3.67 ERA. He's the 11th-winningest southpaw in the big leagues since 2004. Since being activated off the disabled list with a right oblique (side) muscle strain, he is 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA.

STL: RHP Chris Carpenter (4-2, 2.63 ERA)
Carpenter allowed a season-high six runs in his last start at Kansas City, but came out with a win thanks to great run support. The right-hander struggled with location in that game, but still managed to fan eight in six innings. Based on his track record as a reigning Cy Young Award winner, the Cardinals can figure on Carpenter bouncing back with a flourish.

Steve Finley continues to lead the Majors in the 270-yard dash -- that's triples. He notched his eighth three-bagger Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Chris Carpenter has been scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday due to back stiffness.
Carpenter was nearly scratched from a start earlier this season because of a similar problem. Brad Thompson is going to fill in for him against the Giants. Carpenter will probably make his next scheduled start. If not, the Cardinals will recall Anthony Reyes to fill in for him.
