Padres Is Sean Burroughs finally out of his Padre misery?

Looks like Burroughs may be a goner......

Burroughs for Brazelton a near deal

The San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Devil Rays are completing a deal that will send third baseman Sean Burroughs east in exchange for right-hander Dewon Brazelton. Barring any late setbacks, the deal could be announced Wednesday.

"The deal should be completed soon," a source close to the negotiations confirmed.

Once seen as the third baseman that would be a cornerstone of the franchise for ten years, Sean Burroughs failed to live up to the expectations placed on him and will get a fresh start with Tampa Bay.

The situation is eerily similar to the player the Padres are set to acquire, Dewon Brazelton . The right-hander has been enigmatic to the D-Rays since being selected third overall in the 2001 draft.

Brazelton has a live fastball that touches the mid-nineties but has never been the master of control on the mound. Once a number one starter for Tampa, Brazelton walked 60 in 71 innings in 2005, going 1-8. He was sent to the minors, the third straight year he has split time between the big league club and the minors.

The Padres became disenchanted with Burroughs during the 2005 season, sending him down to their Triple-A affiliate in Portland to regain his stroke. Even then, most club officials said there was no way they could see him coming back in 2006.

Of his 71 hits with the Padres, Burroughs collected just ten that went for extra bases and his .318 on base percentage did little to alleviate his lack of power.

The ninth overall selection in the 1998 draft, Burroughs bounced back in Portland with 11 of his 36 hits going for extra bases.

The writing, however, has been on the wall with the third baseman and now the Padres are on the verge of trading him - barring any unforseen circumstances.

eh, it's a wash. Brazelton is terrible, but so is Burroughs.

Hopefully Balsley can give Brazelton a rebirth (he was a 3rd overall draft pick).
If not, it's not like we really gave up anything for him.

    Padres

As Pad fans, we have a history of watching players go to another team and excel. It is the Pad curse. At the same time the reverse has happened, although less often, that a sucky player comes to the Pads and excels. I still think all this trading BS is WAY out of control, especiallly the salaries and deals......

Brazelton is a flyball pitcher right? So it's reasonable to expect him to perform slightly better in Petco....

i've never bought into this "watching people go elsewhere and excell" theory.

It's mainly fed by us having people already excelling as Padres and then dumping them somewhere else, ala Tom Werner days.

It's our turn to get the upside, and not burned.........Brazelton will become the pitcher he was supposed to be when drafted and Burroughs will go on to become an avg. 3rd baseman........and we'll look back on this trade and think........GREAT DEAL !!!
