    Who needs Ramon Hernandez anyways?

The thread title was mearly meant to make a point, but it seems that almost every game recap I load when I look at the box-score I see "Miguel Olivo: 2-3, 1 RBI" "Miguel Olivo:1-4, 1 HR" "Miguel Olivo: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI"
Also, in talking to people who are actually watching the games, I am getting word that Olivo is actually better than Ramon defensively, actually throws would-be base stealers out, and actually, (get this) blocks the plate (Although the same person did state that Ramon blocks balls in the dirt better)

I realize it's still a small sample size, and I also realize he sucked in Seattle. But, at the same time, if he keeps this up, (and he doesn't appear to be slowing down right now) I think the Padres can afford to let someone else give Ramon his 10 mil per year to hit maybe 18 HRs, never block the plate, and quit on his team in the middle of a pennant race and let Olivo take over the full time starting duties. Of course i'd advise them to sign a veteran back-up "just incase" but, assuming Olivo doesn't suddenly suck (again) for the last month of the year, I'd feel perfectly comfortable handing the starting job over to him to hold down until Kotteras is ready. And, if he proves worthy enough, even after Kotteras is ready...using him as trade bait. They can then use the money that would be used to sign Ramon somewhere else

He's gone 0-for-3 the last two games and is hitting well under .200 for the season. You must be selecting specific box scores to check.

well under .200 for the season includes his stink fest in Seattle.
I'm curious what his stats reveal since his arrival in San Diego, which is what I was reffering to. I'll venture into the world's slowest internet connection and look it up.

I didn't open yesterday's box score, and today's I was more focused on Peavy beating the Rocket in a complete game pitcher's duel. Nobody gets bad grades from me for going 0-3 against Roger Clemens

.867 OPS. 15-2 K to BB kinda scares me though, and the .318 OBP doesn't look good either, but he's a #8 hitter, I suppose.

    ah, here we go.

in 62 at bats (I did admit it was a small sample size, and added the proviso "as long as he keeps it up")

    he's batting .274 with 17 hits, 4 HRs, 8 RBIs for a .548 SLG

I can't figure out his OPS because I was simply going off his game logs, which didn't give me his total plate apperances, which means I couldn't get his OBP.

But, since his acquisition, he has raised his OBP by 42 points and his SLG by 79 points, which means he's rasied his OPS by 121 points.

Of course his totals are still prety bad, but he was pretty atrocious in Seattle, which does leave me room for caution. (which is why I added the proviso to also sign a veteran catcher, which would be the back up plan if Ramon demands too much $$$ anyways)

Oh, and prior to going 0-fer against Roy Oswalt and Roger Clemens, Olivo has gone o-fer a grand total of 5 times in a Padres uniform, and only twice in a row one other time.

And as I turn on the TV and notice the Padres game is on, there's Miguel Olivo hitting a 2 out, 2 RBI bases loaded single to extend the Padres' lead
