Of course the hilariously bad defense may keep Kimbrel fresh by blowing a lot leads, so there's that.

Kimbrel also has terrifying mechanics. I just don't think they get nearly enough to warrant jumping at this move now, IMO.

You could say the same thing about Mike Trout if everyone got drunk and decided to trade him to San Diego for Wil Venable.

He hasn't shown any signs hinting at decline to this point and he's 26 years old.

    This seems like a stretch.

Obviously anything can happen but there's no basis to predict it at this juncture.

mechanics aren't decline, they lead to more seemingly sudden injury.

That probably explains all the time he's spent on the DL his career.

We'll see. I have almost nothing bad to say about Kimbrel as a pitcher. I just don't think his addition statistically adds much, and Upton's like tying an achor to your foot. You may keep moving but it sure as fuck doesn't help you get where you wanna go.

Upton's a sidebar that had to happen to get Kimbrel. Let's not pretend he's part of the real equation here.

Of course, now if Kimbrel does blow his arm off Mofo's going to bump this thread sometime in 2017.

Except he is. He is eating money that could have been spent on actually improving the roster. Instead he'll sit on the bench, put up negative WAR and cost you money and a roster spot.

They're actually spending 500,000 less on Melvin this year than they would have been spending on Maybin and Quentin combined, so if your concern is for addressing the roster this year you're actually off base with your argument.

Melvin hurts them financially next year and even more the year after.

Easier to move a big expiring than a big 3-year deal. We'll see. I think you got better on paper, I just don't know if it had to be done right now like this. Honestly, I hope you guys win the division, the Pads are likable. Maybe the Mets'll even see you in October if the baseball Gods smile upon me (they won't)

Obviously Melvin's a bad contract. There's no spinning that. I just don't think taking it on is as crippling as you're painting it.

It's a gamble, of course. If Kimbrel does get hurt that basically makes the entire thing shitty. But he had to come with the deal.

Of course, I don't know what Preller's budget it so it's hard to really form some kind of opinion when I don't know how close to his ceiling he's taken himself.

I'm just blown away by the lateness or earliness of such a big deal, hope it works out for somebody.
