    Padres Padres want Lackey?

Padres exec likely heading to Cubs, but which one? | SignOnSanDiego.com

-The Padres have internally discussed the possibility of acquiring starting pitcher John Lackey from the Red Sox, if the Red Sox agree to eat most of Lackey’s contract. Lackey formerly pitched for Bud Black when the Padres manager was the Angels' pitching coach.

Lackey, 32, was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in 28 starts for the Red Sox in 2011 and recently came under criticism for his actions during games in the Boston clubhouse while between starts. Lackey has three seasons to go plus a vesting option for 2015 on a five-year, $82.5 million contract.
Very interesting, Harang turned things around so Lackey could be a possibility but the Red Sox would have to eat a lot and I mean a lot!

So long as the Red Sox eat the contract I'm fine with it. PetCo could probably help him.

Who's the exec the article title is talking about?

ESPN sources say it is Jed Hoyer heading to Chicago under "soon to be named" President Theo with Josh Byrnes becoming the Pads GM.

I don't think I like the idea of Byrnes as GM.

Of course, I'm still not sure where I stand on Hoyer so I don't know if I like or hate his departure.

I guess since I'm uncertain I'll just default to what mofo thinks my opinion is and be pissed that he's leaving.

All smack aside, Hoyer and Byrnes each would make a good GM for a team with big-market resources. The GM isn't the problem in San Diego. It's the owner, or specifically, his leveraged purchase of the team.

Apparently the compensation won't be much of anything. Low level minor leaguers. It's more about saving face than really getting something. I read that Moorad views Byrnes as a son. He's the one who gave him that crazy 8 year deal in Arizona. Hoyer got a 5 year offer from Epstein. So when he asked Moorad about getting an extension in SD he told him that wouldn't happen, and he could take the Cubs job. Moorad is more than happy to have Byrnes and Hinch replace Hoyer and McLeod.

It was sarcasm, DMB I'm surprised they're getting any players.

It's all backwards. The Padres should get good compensation because Hoyer is making a lateral movement taking another GM job. Yet the Red Sox wanted all the Cubs top prospects and their employee was taking a promotion. Just weird if you ask me. I'm sure you Giants fans aren't complaining.

I agree it's backwards but from earlier reports, it sounded like all the Padres were going to get was cash due to the friendly relationship Ricketts and Moorad had.

What does that say about an owner's priorities that he's willing to sell his two highest-regarded execs for cash savings while promoting his "baseball sons" in their places and his idea of saving face (certainly don't want anybody to think it was a favor to a fellow owner, no siree!) is to accept low level minor leaguers?
