    Padres Padres 2011/12 offseason

Been a pretty busy offseason for the Padres

    - Hoyer moves on to Chicago, Byrnes takes over as GM
    - Traded Latos to Cincy for Alonso, Volquez, and others
    - Traded for Huston Street after losing Bell
    - Leblanc to Miami for John Baker
    - Traded for Carlos Quentin

A few other minor deals such as signing Mark Kotsay (whatever) and trading Luis Hernandez to Cleveland.

I kind of like the direction this team is going, actually, but until there's some resolution to the ownership fiasco I'm not going to get any real hopes up.

Offense should have some flair with Alonso and Quentin.

I keep forgetting the Padres signed Mark Kotsay until somebody brings it up at SOSD.

    Re: Padres 2011/12 offseason

The Padres have agreed to sign Micah Owings to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training, Dan Hayes of the North County Times tweets. Legacy Sports Group represents the 29-year-old right-hander.

Owings spent the 2011 season with the Diamondbacks, posting a 3.57 ERA with 6.3 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and a 38% ground ball rate in 63 innings. A former starter with the Diamondbacks and Reds, Owings has pitched mostly out of the bullpen since 2010. At the plate, he has nine homers and an impressive .286/.313/.507 batting line in 217 career plate appearances. Kirk Gibson let Owings bat for himself regularly last year and asked him to pinch hit on one other occasion.

According to a Rosenthal tweet yesterday it's a ML contract, so he's going to be fighting for a rotation spot with someone like Moseley with the loser going to the bully for mop up duties most likely.......

The Padres will receive a rights fee of $30MM in 2012 for their new TV deal with FOXSports, a source tells Jay Posner of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The source adds that the Friars could earn as much as $40MM this year depending on a signing bonus and other factors.
