They've added more than that when comparing this team to the team that STARTED last season, not the team that ENDED last season....This seems to be a tough one to grasp

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Padres are considering signing Russell Branyan and using him in a platoon at first base.
Olney mentions Kyle Blanks as a potential platoon partner from the right side of the plate, but he likely won't be back from Tommy John surgery until well into the season. Still, Branyan is the type of low-cost alternative that should appeal to the Padres. While his chronic back condition makes him a question mark, he has collected 56 home runs over the past two seasons. He's one of the few sluggers that may think PETCO is a walk in the park.
Branyan's back has to be a concern but its not a bad deal for a cheap player but that ballpark and NL West pitching might cause problems for his HR totals.

I think it's time to change that sig PFF

im not having trouble grasping that at all. The only difference is Ryan Ludwick and he wasn't exactly tearing the cover off the ball after the trade, and that was when he was protected by Adrian. Now he's protected by Russel Branyan.

Ludwick is the only difference between the team that started on the field last year compared to the one being put together now?? Holy crapfire no wonder you don't get it

That's not what I meant, and you know it.

Ludwick is the only difference between what's different between now and season's end and what's different now and season's beginning.

In other words, he and Tejada (who's in SF now) are the only differences between the beginning of 09 and the end of 09, so all this harping on me not comprehending exactly which team you're saying was upgraded is pointless when Ludwick doesn't add much more to it.

Hawpe officially replaces AGon at first base. Still think they are good on paper?

on paper this team was a 100 loss team at the beginning of the year in 2009, which is a big part of the reason Bud Black won manager of the year without even making the playoffs.

On paper (which is not the real game), this team looks worse to me. The middle infield improved but nothing else did. You can call Maybin an upgrade but I don't see much coming from him especially going from one pitcher's park to another.

Really ? Well it's good to know you and Bill James don't see things the same way Here is his take on this team

    Bartlett: .279/.345/.380 6 HR, 79 R, 50 RBI, 17 SB
    Hudson: .276/.351/.396 9 HR, 77 R, 57 RBI, 8 SB
    Hawpe: .265, 362/.445. 14 HR, 53 R, 66 RBI, 2 SB
    Ludwick: .261/.333/.461, 23 HR, 70 R, 85 RBI, 1 SB
    Venable: .249/.321/.399, 10 HR, 49 R, 40 RBI, 16 SB (350 ABs)
    Headley: .280/.355/.430, 13 HR, 67 R, 62 RBI, 11 SB
    Maybin: .277/.349/.424, 14 HR, 85 R, 60 RBI, 20 SB
    Hundley: .238/.305/.401, 11 HR, 38 R, 50 RBI, 1 SB
Far better than it was to BEGIN last season......

Where's the rotation projection? No true power threat in that lineup and a lot of generous projections. Hawpe hitting third for your team is never a good sign. Glad Bill James and I are wrong just as often

Don't forget that nobody said this team would be incredible either......Just that they look better on paper than they did at the BEGINNING of last year.....

And the rotation was addressed many posts ago.......but if you're referring about from James I have no idea what he thinks about them....but there is nothing to suggest this wont be another very strong rotation inside of Petco
