The speculated payroll cutback was going to happen either way.

I don't see how this changes anything for the good or the bad. Moores is still the majority owner and controls the team.

Payroll was lowering without any actions being taken regardless....they aren't slashing, lowering, dropping or by any other method actively reducing payroll. Will it be lower, yes, but as a direct result of going with younger players and fewer veterans......As of now it's not for any other reason than this.......

Pads picked up Travis Denker off waivers. He was with us last year and showed a good approach at the plate considering he was only playing A ball before getting called up.

MLB.com reports that the Padres are "leaning toward" picking up their $9 million option on Brian Giles for 2009.
San Diego has 10 days to make a decision and could choose to buy Giles out for $3 million, but general manager Kevin Towers has hinted that he'll be back after the 37-year-old hit .306/.398/.456 in 147 games this season.
$9 million for a .306 hitter is a bargain these days. There should be no "leaning towards" anything. Just do it!

And it's really only 6m since we'd have to pay 3m to buy him out.......so it's a nobrainer IMO

    Re: 2008-2009 Offseason thread

The Orioles, Reds and Tigers are among those interested in acquiring Khalil Greene, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Greene, who declined a four-year, $29 million offer from the Padres a year ago, will be eligible for free agency for the first time after next season. He's set to make $6.5 million in 2009. There's been talk of him going to Atlanta as part of a Jake Peavy deal, but those talks are at an impasse. He'd make quite a bit of sense for the Orioles or Tigers. The Reds, though, are already on the hook for Alex Gonzalez's $5.375 million salary.
The Orioles make the most since. The Tigers can do better.

I just know they Orioles need an upgrade at SS. Tigers have money to get a better all around SS.

Oh I agree........I like the idea.......I think a package with Greene and maybe one of our promising prospects for Guthrie would be nice

The O's would rather give up Guthrie than Matt Albers. Mayb the Padres could get Ramon Hernandez in the deal. There is also a Coco Crisp for Greene rumor that doesn't make any sense.

Greene for Crisp is a joke to me........what a mess that would be.......

last year Crisp would have been a good fit......now not so much.....

I heard a rumor of Delmon Young for Kouzmanoff..........that I like

Once again Nick Markakis gets overlooked. I am familiar with the author of this article. He posts over at dugout central. He's not the smartest guy in the world and is often wrong. Sky thinks stats are everything. He honestly thinks Omar Vizquel doesn't belong in the HOF. He also thinks Mark Ellis produces more than Carlos Lee. This guys opinion means as much as yours or mine. Giles was in the top three last year but not better than Markakis. Notice on his list he has Jayson Werth ahead of Randy WinnSorry Sky.
