It's simple fundamentals. But you are right, he is a fat boy and if he doubted his speed for a second he should have stayed at second. Rookie mistake.
He isn't most definately safe if he doesn't stop for a split second. He still would've been meat. You don't ****in' waste a lead-off double in extra innings especially with Brad Hawpe in RF and Clintoris Barmes playing 2b who has a SS arm. If it isn't one Hoffman blowing the game I guess it has to be another one.
Re: Rockies@Padres 4/15/08-4/17/08
I think he would have been safe and don't think it would have been that close if he didn't stop. Hard to rebuild momentum especially for someone that slow. He never even looked at Hoffman until he was on top of the bag. If he keeps his stride and never slows down, he's safe with a runner on third and no outs. Rookie mistake and simple break down in fundamentals. Always pick up your third base coach! If he never slows down, this isn't an issue and Hoffman is a genius.

Did you even watch the ******* play? He would've been out. It was a moderately shit toss from Barmes but got it there quick enough and the start of the relay from Hawpe was a line. If he is running balls to the wall out of the gate he is still out. It was Hoffman's **** up. Rookie mistake? If you have a veteran out there who knows the scouting report, knows not to run on Hawpe, knows that Barmes original position is SS... he most likely stops at second regardless what the 3rd base coach is saying. And who's job is it to actually know that? Hoffman's. He should've been screaming his lungs out to stop at 2.
Re: Rockies@Padres 4/15/08-4/17/08
Yes I saw the play and saw McNaulty practically stop in his tracks. If he doesn't do that, he is safe. A veteran picks up his third base coach, the rookie didn't. Again, if McNaulty doesn't stop, Hoffman looks great and rightfully so. But hey, you can think what you want.

He didn't practically stop in his tracks it was more like a stutter-step
If he doesn't do that, he is still out
A veteran knows the game and knows to stop at 2nd ****ing base
A 3rd base coach in the position should that McNaulty would get thrown out 80-95% of the time with Hawpe in RF and Barmes at 2nd, and at that position of the game he should have held him.
Re: Rockies@Padres 4/15/08-4/17/08
A veteran knows when to pick up the coach and it isn't right on top of the bag. You want to call it a stutter step, fine but it is still losing momentum that couldn't be regained which costs him dearly. If he doesn't do that, he is safe.
If a third base coach knew he wouldn't even look at him until he was on the bag, I agree with you. Hawpe and Barmes have good arms but it wouldn't have mattered if he picked up Hoffman 15 feet in front of second. He didn't take the proper route and stopped all his momentum. You are more likely to score from third with no outs than from second with no outs especially with the Padres lack of offense last night and tendency to strike out. This is on McNaulty. Again, think what you want but don't think you are any more right than I am since we both don't know for certain if he would have been safe or not. I think he is safe and its not that close. You think he is out.

Hawpe has a great arm. It's not just good. And again Barmes has a SS arm. It's just not the wisest move considering the situation.

You are also more likely to score from second base with no outs than with no one on and one out.

So you are admitting that he should have stopped at second? :p:
Re: Rockies@Padres 4/15/08-4/17/08
He did stop at second:) He just shouldn't have.
Re: Rockies@Padres 4/15/08-4/17/08
And what the hell do you care? Your team won:)
Re: Rockies@Padres 4/15/08-4/17/08
He never stopped......he studdered for a split second when he picked up Hoffman just over halfway to 2nd and couldn't believe he was being waved on......he NEVER STOPPED or even came close to stopping.....
And it's dead wrong to waste a leadoff double in extras....dead wrong if you think it's even close to ok to make the 1st or last out at 3rd in an inning, let alone extras......and dead wrong if you think that little studder in his momentum was the difference in him not being total meat at 3rd..........anyone that thinks otherwise is a clown
