    Padres sign Randy Wolf

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Sources: Padres, Wolf have deal in place

The Padres, taking a chance on a pitcher coming off shoulder surgery, have reached a preliminary agreement with free-agent left-hander Randy Wolf on a one-year contract, according to major-league sources.
The deal is pending a physical.

Wolf, 31, did not pitch after July 3 last season with the Dodgers, finishing 9-6 with a 4.73 ERA in 18 starts. He underwent surgery at the end of August, but is expected to be ready by spring training.

Wolf drew interest from the Phillies and Astros as well as the Padres after the Dodgers declined the option on his contract. By signing with the Padres, Wolf can remain in his native southern California.

The Padres' rotation, led by National League Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy, Greg Maddux and Chris Young, again figures to be strong. Wolf is 78-66 lifetime with a 4.73 ERA.

The Padres seem to like that veteran left hander in the rotation, a la David Wells.

Well a flyball pitcher like Wolf could do worse than play in Petco for Balsey. Anyone want to go out on a limb and think this guy puts up close to a career type season in 08 barring injury ?

Considering he hasn't pitched 150 innings in four seasons, I don't think anyone will go out on that limb.

To be fair, you don't have to be predicting he stays healthy to meet PFF's qualifications since he said "...barring injury"

In other words, if I were to go out on the proverbial limb I'd be predicting that he has a career year should he happen to stay healthy.

I fully understood his qualifications. If he stays healthy, he will struggle since he hasn't pitched 150 innings in four seasons. Pads might get a good month out of him but he would most likely have a terrible second half.

What? You didn't have a problem with my response until Leo made his comment. I responded to Leo's comment and made myself perfectly clear. Don't make this into something. Any starting pitcher who hasn't sniffed 150 IP in four seasons will not have a career type year.

Randy Wolf's deal with the Padres is expected to guarantee him $4 million with a chance to earn $5 million more in incentives.
Wolf, who is coming back from shoulder surgery, will have to pass a physical before the deal is official.
Pretty steep price for this guy but not as steep as last year's $8 mil.

    Re: Padres sign Randy Wolf

I read that quote wrong, I thought it said 4 mil and could be 5 mil if he reaches incentives.

    I missed the "more"

Wolf could end up getting 9 mil

Granted if he's getting that it most likely means he was healthy all year (since performance bonuses are generally centered around innings pitched or games started)

But, with that in mind, he could theoretically just stay healthy but suck...and get 9 mil.
