GMJ is Gary Matthews Jr.. He would be closer to what the Padres need than Willits.

I went and compared Wilits stats against GMJ and for the number of AB's they are pretty comparable. GMJ has a hell of a lot more power, while Wilits has a hell of a lot more SB's. GMJ is 33 and Wilits is like 28. So in all honesty, it's probably one half dozen the other, but I still think I would rather have GMJ, he had a breakout year last year.

GMJ's break out year was 2006.

Not that he was bad last year, but it was 2006 that gave him his current contract.

I think the Angels are keeping GMJ around and either moving him to left field or to the DH role. I think he may split time as the DH with Garrett Anderson.

    Re: 2008 off season thread

This was brought up in another Padres forum....

Now that the Brewers are without their closer (Cordero, set to sign with the Reds) and their setup man (Linebrink, now with the White Sox), if you're the Padres would you offer Cla Meredith for a package for 2 of these 3 players (Bill Hall, Gwynn Jr or Chris Capuano)?

Meredith in a package or for a package? Meredith alone wouldn't be enough to get you one Bill Hall or Capuano but could get you Gwynn Jr..

    Re: 2008 off season thread

The Brewers are going to start looking for a closer, after losing Cordero to the Reds and Linebrink to the White Sox. I don't know that Cla is closer material, but you could at least approach Milwaukee about a deal.

    Re: 2008 off season thread

I agree you can offer and should but I'm saying Meredith alone wouldn't get a Bill Hall who just signed a 4 yr deal before the season. They may want to dump Capuano but don't think they will after one bad year and I think they need him to compete next year. Again, I think the Padres should call about guys like Meredith and Bell.

    Re: 2008 off season thread

I feel bad for Capuano, I don't think the Brewers got 1 win with Cap on the hill. Poor guy. I guess we'll have to see where Milwaukee goes from here, I know Eric Gagne is still out there on the free agent market, so they could go that route, but I think they may look to make a trade instead.

Especially if Gagne is expecting $8mil/yr after melting down in Boston.

Gagne is a Boras guy, so there's no telling what that a**hole is going to be asking for his client.

As long as the Giants stay away from him, I'm happy.

I just wish Andruw Jones would tell Boras to go take a hike. A little piece of history as far as Jones goes. The last contract he negotiated with the Braves, he did without Boras.

I wouldn't argue against getting Matthews Jr, but I don't think the Angels are going to deal him.
