Re: 2008 off season thread
Addition by subtraction where K's are concerned........no Cameron means far fewer K's.......Probably 30+ fewer K's at just one position.......
AGon is primed to have his "breakout" year following his sophomore slump :D......hopefully he can cut down on his K's now that he wont be called on to carry the offense. .300/30+/100+/ 125k's ( hopefully less that would be a huge step )
Greene is what he is, and I don't see him changing much....maybe his first complete season taught him some plate discipline, but I'm not holding my breath....I think he is what he is........ and the only change might be more HR power....I expect .250/25+/90+ / 120+k's
I fully expect Kouz's #'s to do nothing but improve......seeing none of the guy that showed up last April, and much more of the guy that showed up after May 8th.
Re: 2008 off season thread
Cameron and Edmonds strikeout rates are almost identical. I expect better strikeout rates from Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff but nothing drastic. Iguchi will add more strikeouts at second. Not to mention the pitching in the West will be improved.

Pitching in the west being improved is a good point.......

San Diego Padres, Michael Barrett, Major League Baseball - CBSSports.com
Quote:
SAN DIEGO -- Catcher
Michael Barrett and the
San Diego Padres have agreed to a $3.5 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.
Barrett can make another $750,000 in performance bonuses.
He joined the Padres in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in June, became a free agent, then accepted San Diego's offer of arbitration.
Re: 2008 off season thread
Why? He's a serviceable catcher that we definately need and can still be traded for more.
Re: 2008 off season thread
I've got no problem with it. I've always liked him as a person and player.

3.5 mil is definitely better than 5 mil.

Padres to retain Barrett | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Padres sign Robert Fick and Jeff DaVanon
Quote:
The Padres also agreed to deals with catcher-first baseman Robert Fick and switch-hitting outfielder Jeff DaVanon.
Fick, 33, is a career .258 hitter with 69 homers and 324 RBI in 846 games over 10 seasons. He spent the past two seasons with the Washington Nationals.
Acquired by the Padres in 2004, Fick hit .265 with three homers and 30 RBI in 230 at-bats with the Padres in 2005. In addition to catching and playing first, Fick started games at both corner outfield spots and made one start at third base.
A San Diego native, DaVanon played at San Diego State and is also the son of Jerry DaVanon, who attended Hoover High and was a member of the original major league Padres of 1969.
DaVanon, who just turned 34, missed most of last season while recuperating from ankle surgery that shortened his 2006 season. He was 4-for-26 in 13 games with Arizona before being acquired by the Oakland A's, with whom he went 15-for-63 in 26 games.
Both Fick and DaVanon were invited to the major league spring training camp.
bench moves.

ESPN - Padres make case as front-runners for ex-Cubs ace Prior - MLB
Quote:
The
San Diego Padres appear to be the front-runner to sign pitcher
Mark Prior, who figures to make a final choice among many offers very soon, perhaps within the next 24-48 hours.
The Padres have offered a modest base salary plus a performance bonus package to Prior, according to sources, but other teams continue to talk with Prior, and other more aggressive offers could take shape. The former Cub pitcher lives in San Diego County, and in the end, he may opt to play for the team located closest to his home, in what figures to be a transitional year in his career.
Re: 2008 off season thread
Prior is the ultimate risk / reward guy........as all risky moves it's based on IF's........
If he's healthy, we scored bigtime if we sign him
If he's healthy, he'll dominate in Petco
If he's healthy, our rotation is set for a long time
He's a San Diego guy
lives on the same street as KT
Petco is a pitcher friendly park
Our bullpen can help him greatly
Balsey and his magic wand is his best chance
This makes sense......from both sides, if the money works for both.........even if he has to take less........if Prior wishes to launch any sort of career rebound, there might not be a better place to do that than here.
Re: 2008 off season thread
It's the perfect contract, lower dollars (means lower risk) but heavy in incentives, so if he lives up to the hype he will still get what he's worth, if he doesnt it wont cost us too much.
