His career.....that's what I'm basing it off of.......not some feeling that he'll suddenly DO something he's never done before.....

In the season he got more AB's than ever ......he posted total crap #'s.......that should tell you all you need to know to stop arguing on his behalf.......and that was while he was still young and capable.........not aging and well past his "prime"

We'll see how he does in Houston if he's going to be the every day guy. I think he'll do very well, just my opinion.

Why don't you make your prediction based on a full season of AB's.......for Blum

    Re: Offseason Farm Updates

Where is all of this 600 ABs coming from? Do you know how few players get 600 ABs? The numbers I gave were based on a 162 game average and 473 ABs. Pretty telling of what this guy can do in a full time role which isn't good. Given more ABs, his averages would go down even further. I have no doubt the Astros are looking for an everyday second baseman not named Blum but looks like Castillo might have gotten his deal with the Mets according to a Dominican website.

No idea where the 600 AB's are coming from.......he's in the 600 AB conversation where Jenkins is concerned also.......neither guy will sniff those totals now

Adrian Gonzalez got 600+ at bats....that's probably why I threw that number out there. I figure that's a good number for an every day player.

Only 19 players in the NL had 600+ AB's last year.........why would a mediocre IFer who would bat down in the order sniff this ?

Look, my point in this whole thing is, he's proved he's a much more productive player when he gets a chance to play every day. He's proved that in San Diego the past 2 seasons and I think, if given the chance, he'll prove that in Houston as well.

Most players are better when they get steady ABs, doesn't mean they should be starters. John Mabry hit better when he got steady play but no one thought of him to be a starter. Any team can do better than Blum.

If they're being productive, it doesn't really matter what they're thought of by other teams, as long as he's bringing something to the table for whatever team he's playing for.

A .250 average and 50 RBI isn't really bringing much to the table. Name a team that viewed him as a starter in the past five seasons. Exactly!

I just got finished saying that it doesn't matter if he's thought of as a starter or not, as long as he's being productive. The past 2 seasons, he saved the Padres ass and was extremely "productive" for them when they needed it. Khalil went down with an injury in 2006, Blum stepped up HUGE. Last season, Giles was sucking it up, Blum stepped in and did a great job.

    Re: Offseason Farm Updates

It matters because you think he can play a "productive" 162 games. That is what you are saying or at least your so-called source in Dallas. So yes it does matter if teams view him as a starter. If you call those numbers productive and are fine with that being your everyday second baseman, your team isn't going too far. Plus he hit .233 filling in for Greene. Not exactly productive.

You're right, I do think he can play a "productive" 162 games, I really do. The funny thing about this whole conversation is, we're talking about this like he's going to be the every day guy for the Padres and he's supposedly signing with Houston. Oh well, anyway, the source is just a columnist from the Houston Chronicle that covers the Astros (Brian McTaggart). He's been really cool about answering questions about Loretta and Blum the past few weeks.

Here's his response when asked about Blum this past Thursday.....

    From: "McTaggart,Brian" <Brian.McTaggart@chron.com>
    To: T"Todd Kaufmann" <TKaufmann@tams.com>

    Date: Thursday, November 15, 2007 05:44AM
    Subject: RE: Loretta or Blum

The Astros appear ready to let Loretta go, and i saw Blum's quote about coming to the Astros. Loretta is a much better player, but i guess Blum is cheaper and Loretta wants a starting job. Blum was pretty popular when he was here a few years ago. Remember Blum hit the homer that beat the Astros in Game 4 of the 2005 World Series. I'm not sure where Loretta will end up.

    Re: Offseason Farm Updates

No, we were talking about him being the everyday second baseman for the Astros and not the Padres. According to your post from your "source", he doesn't think Blum will be the everyday guy either. But things are on your side since your "sources" have been wrong a lot of the time. Can't recall one that has been right.

Loretta is a much better player, but i guess Blum is cheaper and Loretta wants a starting job.
