Just ideas being thrown out there. Pettitte is only 35 I believe, he's at least younger than Wells is, though I know he'd be more of an expensive signing.

    Re: 2008 Payroll

Pettite is a crafty lefty, who does still have some game........not sure how much heart he has left though........doesn't seem to be into the game much anymore and I'd had to toss a ton of change his way to get a guy with nothing left......plus I don't think he leaves NY

    He's got a player option for 16M

He has yet to decide whether he will exercise a $16M player option for 2008 to remain with the Yankees. He could decline the option try for a bigger, better deal on the free agent market, although the Astros, Yankees, Padres and Dodgers might be the only teams he plays for. The Mariners expressed interest in him at the trading deadline.

    Wood - PASS
    Clement - PASS
    Jennings - PASS
    Silva - SIGN

I actually kind of like Silva and I think he'd do well against the National League and in a big ball park like Petco.

Fukudome is going to cost more than $6 million too isn't he? Don't you have to pay negotiation rights like with Matsuzaka/Igawa/Iwamura?

    Re: 2008 Payroll

I think having a "crafty lefty" like Pettite would make this rotation the best in the NL West. Having a rotation like Peavy, Cy, Pettite, Maddux and possibly Hensley or whoever is ready from AAA Portland, though that's unlikely. I know Coach talked to Grady Fuson about possibly having Justin Hampson as a starter next season.

Yes you do, and he could be priced out of our range as well. Especially with teams like the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Giants, etc joining in.

    Re: 2008 Payroll

I don't think it does either because it's a one time fee, but if that negotiating price starts to skyrocket, I don't think it's worth paying that much just to talk to him. That fee doesn't come with the promise that he's going to sign with you. If you pay that fee and you can't sign him before the deadline, that's money you can't get back.

    Re: 2008 Payroll

It can't sky rocket.......it's a blind bid I'm pretty sure, which is why the Yanke couldn't counter the Redsox with DiceK......meaning you submit your $$$ and the highest bidder wins the rights.......

The only reason there is a limit for player payroll (since there's no cap in baseball) is because Towers is only alloted so much to spend on player payroll so that John Moores' profit margin does not go in the red.

So, in short, I'm pretty sure the neg. fee would count towards it.

But, that's just a guess. Who knows, maybe Moores would give a bit more leeway on that.

It certainly wouldn't factor into payroll for the upcoming seasons since I'm assuming he'd be signed for more than one year.

Since we're talking about negotiating fees, does anyone have the big for Iwamura from last offseason? I think it was somewhere around $10M-$12M if I remember correctly.

    Devil Rays bid $4.5M
    Indians bid $3.5M
The Padres also put in a bid, but it wasn't nearly that, I don't think.
