I doubt the Yankees let Posada walk after his best season plus the fact they have no one to replace him. I say no to both.

Do you think Posada would take a backup role? He had a pretty good year offensively and I think would work well in this offense. Though, I think he's going to command quite a bit and I assume he'll probably end up back with the Yankees, as will Rivera.

I doubt Posada takes a back up role

I doubt Bard is our starter if we sign Posada

I wouldn't persue Posada for the same reason I stated I wouldn't go after Mariano.

Too many holes to spend too much on upgrading a position we're already pretty good at.

A back up catcher is needed, however.

Back up catchers are easy to find and will be found way, way down the road.

No way Posada one of the best in the game is a back up.
No way Bard is on this team if Posada is
Agreed.......we have other areas that require out attention long before the catcher spot, unless we have no plans to bring Bard back.......which I believe we will.......multi-year deal very inexpensive

I agree with not going after Posada as well, I think between Colt Morton and Nick Hundley, one of those 2 kids can handle a backup role.

    Re: 2008 Payroll

Crisp in CF and Fukudome in RF and this is a very realistic 25-Man Roster that is actually less expensive that the original thought, and still very good.......it also leaves us more $$$ to utilize.

    1B Adrian Gonzales $0.750m
    2B Antonelli $0.380m
SS Khalil Greene $4.0m ***Arbitration Eligible
    3B Kevin Kouzmanoff $0.380m
    C Bard $1.5m
    LF Brian Giles $9.0m
    CF Crisp at $4m
    RF Fukudome at $10M

    SP Jake Peavy $6.0m
    SP Chris Young $2.5m
SP Greg Maddux $10.0m ***Assuming $10m option is taken
    SP #3 type arm $5m
SP Hensley, Cassel, Germano, LeBlanc $0.380-0.490m

    RP Trevor Hoffman $7.5m
    RP Heath Bell $0.380m
    RP Cla Meredith $0.380m
    RP Thatcher $0.380m
    RP Hampson $0.380m
RP Cameron / long releiver $0.380m

    BENCH Blum $0.900m
    BENCH Hairston $0.500m
    BENCH
    BENCH
    BENCH
    BENCH

    $22.32m added
    $1.14 added to the bullpen

    Total Payroll = $64.36m

    Available Funds

    $75.0m Payroll = $10.64m Left to Spend
    $70.0m Payroll = $5.64m Left to Spend
    $65.0m Payroll = $1.36m Left to Spend

The way I see it.......we can do this but need the payroll back up to between $70-75m to not only be competitive, but damn good.........

*I have Giles moving back to LF to help save his knees the extra stress, and since Fukudome has a much better arm it makes sense all the way around.

Here's my rotation as I'd like to see it:

    Peavy
    CY
    Maddux
    Hensley
    Cassell
*LeBlanc if the Padres think he's ready

    BENCH Lane ? $1m maybe
BENCH Loretta ? $2m maybe ( competes with Ant to start, or backs up IF with Blum )
    BENCH catcher ?
    BENCH ???

    $25.32m added

    Total Payroll = $67.36m

Leaves $3-8m to fill in the bench (or contracts that I've made errors with or been slightly short on, keep in mind I might have overshot others so it could be a wash of errors, either way I think it's probably close)

I'm sorry but that is a terrible lineup.

    Re: 2008 Payroll

I don't think he meant that as a lineup Reefer, just by positions. PFF knows, as well as anyone, that Adrian wouldn't be a leadoff hitter.

I didn't mean it as a batting lineup. That is a terrible starting nine and an actual step backwards from 07. Better?

    Re: 2008 Payroll

It's hard to say whether or not that'd be a step back from '07

We don't know how Antonelli would do, however one can argue that he can't be any worse than Marcus Giles was.

We also don't know how Fukudome would perform in the majors, however left field was a mess last year anyways until Hairston had his late season run.

Crisp is an offensive step back from Cameron, though, so I do agree with you somewhat, only with the above caveats.

    Re: 2008 Payroll

If the Padres are, in fact, making an offer to Geoff Jenkins, then you can probably slot him into right field in a platoon situation with Scott Hairston. I think having Jenkins there might make this team better.

ESPN has Craig Stansberry as the Pads most likely starting second baseman right now. What are your thoughts on this?
