    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Now, on the above list that I posted, on the oufield side of it is one Adam Dunn. The Reds have a team option worth $13M or a $500k buyout. I'm getting back on the Adam Dunn bandwagon and here's my reasoning.

Jack Cust, any time his name was brought up, prior to his trade to Oakland, as to why he isn't being given a shot to play with the Padres was he was a defensive liability. In 463 innings in the outfield for Oakland, he made just 4 errors, which is roughly 116 innings between errors. Not to mention his 26 HR's and 86 RBI's in just 124 games.

The reason I bring up Cust to argue for Dunn is, the same "defensive liability" argument is brought up with Dunn as well (1,189 Innings Played, 6 errors). Before you bring up the "he strikes out too much" argument, Dunn K'd 165 times to Mike Cameron's 160. I think Dunn's offense would overcome his apparent "defensive liability" and give this team a much needed power hitter in the middle of their lineup. A player that, when at bat, would make a pitcher think twice about throwing a fastball to.

With Brian Giles, possibly on the shelf past Opening Day, this is one guy who would we could put in left field along with Rowand in Center and add your right fielder, whoever that may be. That's a formidable outfield if you ask me.

Dunn, if available but doubt, would finally give them a true power hitter and would make Petco look small. And yes it was me saying give Cust a chance over Sledge but of course I'm just a stoner! As far as Rowand goes if the Phillies don't resign him will have to fight the Giants for him because I love this guy. Who would go in between Gonzo and Dunn?

The Reds have a team option on Dunn for 2008, if they don't pick up that option, Dunn becomes a Free Agent, am I right?

100% correct but don't see them turning that puppy down. They just can't replace his power. So who would go in between Gonzo and Dunn? Kouz? What's the plan for 2b?

You talking about the Reds or the Padres as far as their 2nd base plans? As far as I know, it's Matt Antonelli's job to lose during ST. As for Dunn, with all the trade talk surrounding him back in July, I'd be shocked if they picked up his $13M option for next year.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

I was talking about the Pads plans for 2b. Didn't think you'd really give a shit about the Reds Dunn was a hard sell in July because they were asking for the moon and didn't get it. I think they pick it up for no other reason than he he is their only real power hitter and you can't replace that for less than $13 mil. Then the Reds can trade him next July with less problems if they are out of it. So is Loretta coming back or what? Great chatting but I have to get out of this house or else I am going to die. Being a one legged ****er is no fun and I need a bar.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Honestly, I think bringing in Loretta is a good idea, if only to give Antonelli a good challenge during Spring Training. I think you may want to start Loretta, being a veteran and knowing this ballpark, let Ant watch and learn from LO and give him a start here and there, just to get his feet wet.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

LO might be had for around 1M.........he should absolutely be brought in for stabiilty either as a starting 2bag if Antonelli can't win it outright in spring, or as a super utility to go with Blum.......

I'm all for Dunn.......but being a defensive liability has more to do with not eveb getting "to" balls rather than the amount of errors made.
Like I said......put me on the "let's get Dunn" bandwagon!

Loretta made $2.5 million last year and will make more this season since he is deserving of a raise unlike Andruw Jones who somehow thinks having an average close to Micheal Jordan's is deserving of one.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

I think an incentive laden deal for Loretta might be plausible, but I think it might take more than $1M to get him. Plus, he's looking for a starting role, but that's not to say he won't take a super utility role in San Diego.

Yup......probably had for more than 1M........most recent prediction I've seen is this from MLB4U.com .......and it's not the Padres

Prediction: Signs 2-year, $7.5M deal with the Astros
If that's what he's commanding.........he's not coming here

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

I know Houston was pretty high on signing him back, they do have a young 2nd baseman by the name of Brooks Conrad in AAA Round Rock, though they may not be sold on him since he only hit .218 but did have 22 HR's and 78 RBI's.

I think Antonelli is where the Padres want to go, but having someone that can challenge him, wouldn't be a bad thing.

    Few updates for you guys....

Aaron Rowand, CF--Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies do not appear interested in re-signing him. Instead, he will test the free agent market where he is expected to command in excess of 5 years, $50M. The Cubs, White Sox, Padres, Cardinals, Braves, Rangers, Nationals, Phillies, Mariners, Pirates and Mets will all express interest.

Marcus Giles, 2B--San Diego Padres: The Padres are likely to decline the $4M option for 2008 on his contract.

Jason Jennings, RHSP--Houston Astros: He is expected to be ready for Opening Day as he continues to progress in recovery from flexor tendon surgery. However, he will have to settle for a 1-or-2-year deal, probably incentive-laden, as a result of the injury. The Padres, Dodgers, Mariners, Phillies, Pirates and D-Backs expressed interest in him at the trading deadline.
