I have heard that about Rowand and can't believe. White Sox weren't very kind to him. Everyone including my Giants will drive up the price for Hunter and Rowand. I think we have all forgotten about Jones
I agree with you that the Yankees need pitching, that's been their downfall since their W.S. in 2000. I still think Steinbrenner is so focused on offense, that he misses the point on pitching, I think Hunter could very well end up in NY because he's a better option in CF than Damon and Cabrera and I think Steinbrenner knows that.

As for Rowand, again, I think the Giants will be after Hunter and Jones, I think Rowand could be a 3rd option for them, unless they plan on keeping Doc Roberts in center. I really think Rowand will fly under the radar because of Hunter and Jones being free agents.

Your right in thinking Hunter will be sought after by the Yankees. They are after everyone. But you asked what i would do and I think they are set as far as OFers go. You have to set priorities. Arod is first and then pitching. I no longer consider Damon a CFer and haven't since before 04. The guy has the weakest arm.

Hunter and Rowand will be tops on the list. Jones is looking for a raise for christ's sake. Who would give this guy a raise based on his lousy season? Boras doesn't have that much magic does he. Rowand will probably the top dog since he will be the cheapest of the bunch.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

You better believe Jones will get what Boras is asking for, for no other reason than he's a Boras guy. Did he have a bad season, absolutely, in comparison to what we're used to seeing him do. Will he still get a big pay day, you better believe he will. I know Boston has interest, I'm sure the Yankees will, among about a dozen other teams.

I know you want ARod then pitching to be your priority, but think like Steinbrenner. Do I think they should re-sign ARod, yes, but he'll opt out and the Yankees have already said they won't deal with him if he does. If ARod opts out, there are going to be so many teams in the bidding war for him, they'll forget all about the Rowand's of the world.

If ARod opts out then they have a huge hole at third. Then that will be more of a priority and more money sunk into a guy like Lowell, the Red Sox MVP.

I don't know if anyone posted this yet, but Brian Giles had right knee surgery yesterday and is expected back for Spring Training.

Yup.......removed some cartilage and did a dust and clean....

edit........Today in the UT.......it's a microfracture surgery........he could be out through spring training, and will hopefully be ready for opening day..........ugh

    October 5, 2007

Padres right fielder Brian Giles had microfracture knee surgery Wednesday in an attempt to stimulate cartilage growth and provide cushion for the joint. He had reported stubborn pain in the right knee dating to late April.

Advertisement The Padres expect Giles, who will turn 37 in January, to be ready for Opening Day. But the damage was greater than expected, according to doctors who spoke with General Manager Kevin Towers.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

I had seen this mentioned before, not here but another rumor article I had read. Anyone have interest in going after Andy Pettite this offseason? I don't think the Yankees will re-sign him and if Houston isn't interested, he might be a good veteran lefty to add to our rotation.

    Any thoughts?

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

I think our main focus needs to be on the OF positions right now........We may very well need all 3 OF positions filled........Giles knee was worse that expected, and he's suspect now, and with his skill sets already weakening, he could be a liabiltiy more than ever now.

So what do you do now ?
Fukudome, Rowand, Giles & Hairston starts until Giles is 100%

That's a costly OF, potentially great, but very pricy......then you need to fill at least 1 SP spot, the other you can promote a guy to fill...........so who

    No thanks on Pettite........

Dont be surprised if it is a little longer. I gotta a feeling he is going to be packing on a few pounds. He is already a stocky guy. Add to that he will be off his feet for a couple of months at his age, and he may become the next boomer wells.

How great would it be if he retires and the Padres get off the hook for the majority of that 10M ? Not sure how that would work though..........injury forced retirement, couldn't see the Pads on the hook for all $10M, I would think there is some sort of ins. policy to protect them against something like this.........

That adds to the growing pool of available funds for offseason spending......coupled with a great trade, could see a much different, much better OF in SD next year.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Paying for the rights to just negotiate with a Japanese player makes me nervous. I like the chance of being able to add Rowand, I think he'll be an upgrade to this outfield. For those who haven't seen it or haven't looked, below is links to the free agents for the Left, Center and Right Field positions.

I'll add this link for the starters on the free agent market

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Pettitte has already had talks about retiring and I think he would if the Yanks don't resign him. What else does he have to prove? Frm is right to be nervous about Japenese ball players and the negociating rights. Look at Dice K, was he worth all of that? It does make me happy that you guys finally got on the Rowand bandwagon. If only the Padres would have let Linebrink go when he had value. Sucks about Giles but Hairston is a good backup plan for when he does comeback which looks to be later than Opening Day if he is to miss ST.

Frm, I think Abreu has just an option for next season so Hunter could be manning CF for the Yankees and Cabrera in RF. Matsui might have an option too.
