    Padres Acquire Lane

Padres acquired outfielder Jason Lane from the Astros for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The Padres needed some outfield depth and got it, though Lane won't be eligible for a spot on the postseason roster. The Astros were likely to non-tender Lane anyway, so they don't mind making the trade. Lane, who hadn't started a game this month, was hitting .178/.257/.349 in 169 at-bats. The secondary skills are there to make him an asset when he's hitting .250. However, he hasn't displayed any ability to hit for average since 2005.
    At least they did something?

Padres make a habit of picking up rejects from the Astros (Linebrink, Ensberg, Blum, etc.)

That's one habit they need to break.

Nice to know that non-waiver trade deadline and the waiver trade deadline serve no purpose when you can still trade for players in the last week of the season.

Unless I missed something, the waiver deadline is supposed to be August 31.

    There is no waiver deadline.

Teams generally just stop participating in it after August 31st because that's the deadline where you have to have your 25 man roster set for the playoffs.

Serves very little purpose to acquire someone else after Aug 31st....unless you're trying to replace an injured starter.

I suspected that there is no waiver deadline. It's still stupid how everyone hypes up the trade deadlines.

No, there is a waiver deadline (August 31). But if you acquire a player after that, he's not eligible for the postseason. Whereas before August 31, he is.

But if you acquire a player after that you're still doing so via waivers, so there is no waiver deadline.

The deadline you're thinking of is the deadline to have your playoff roster set....hence the reason teams generally stop using the non-deadlined waiver process after Aug 31st.

If there was a waiver deadline the Padres wouldn't have Jason Lane or Brett Tomko on the team.

    Re: Padres Acquire Lane

If the Padres win the World Series as expected, Lane gets a ring, right?
