Jake is going to be a Padre for a long time to come, you seem the be the only one that doesn't see that. The Front Office knows they have to make a lot of changes during the offseason and I think they'll make the necessary changes. You know what's funny, I'm not going to be all that broken up if they don't make the playoffs, the way Arizona is playing, they deserve it.

Boy the irony is killing me here. Read todays UT sports section's top story. I think you can starting that plate of crow.........(NOW)

I guess maybe I do know what I am saying.

And so much for your, "Jake is going to be a Padre for a long time to come, you seem the be the only one that doesn't see that."

I expect an apology, but don't feel you have to do it today.

FINALLY....for the first time, you actually backed yourself up. This is what we've been asking you to do this entire time.

Now , on to Jake. This is the first time I've seen him this outspoken. In my opinion, it's about time that Jake was outspoken. He's the face of this franchise, and for him to call out the front office like that I think was very warranted. He made some pointed comments about them not being committed to winning a championship.

The great thing about that article is, he was right on with every comment he made and, I for one, am proud of him for stepping up as a leader and questioning what's going on.

I must say, I'm getting tired of reading crap like this from sports players in general. We heard it with Drew Brees and now with Jake.

“I hope it's not the case,..."

“I am not looking to break the bank. I'm not saying I want a huge payday. I'm going to ask for what's fair. And although I hope it happens here,..."

“I've got to say, the Padres have helped set me up better than I could have ever dreamed. They have given my family security. And I'm proud to be a Padre."

Please save me all of that "I really want to remain a Padre" stuff if you're going to let money keep you from staying here....especially if you're also putting yourself on record that your family already has financial security (as they should with the contract you have)

I'm sure the Padres would be willing to give Jake a fair offer (by "fair" I don't mean whatever the insane market dictates because of what other owners who can afford higher payrolls choose to give their players....I mean a contract that's "fair" in regards to somebody who's already financially set playing a sport for millions of dollars.)

If you want a market value contract then just be up front about it and tell us (the public) that the money is more important to you and save us all this "I really want to remain with the Padres" mumbo jumbo.

    Re: Astros@Padres 8/17/07-8/19/07

Immediately I thought of Tom Glavine.
The Braves couldn't have done anymore for him than they did........and yet he left for New York for an extra years contract. How much money do these guys need?Does loyalty "from" the Team mean nothing anymore?
I know it's a business.I know the Team releases guys when it's in the best interest of the Team. But when you're talking about a franchise player,in his prime, you'd think he would try to stay with the Team who took a chance drafting him and helped develop him. It's not like he won't get a fair offer from the Padres!
And there are times to talk about where you "might" be playing in TWO years, and in the middle of a pennant race when you're under contract for two more years isn't the time.Jake can make his point about wanting the Org. to be committed to winning without threatening to not be a Padre in two years.

This is exactly what I heard from one of my favourite hockey player who was playing near his home-town then left the city crying later signed a big time contract to a division rival for a lot more money, a division rival no less, that what really ticks me off.

and the player was held as the face of the franchise, the heart and soul of the team, the nicest guy in the locker-room, a real leader on and off the ice and yet he wanted "fair market" value.

and now I too am getting sick of players sayng this stuff then just end up signing for the money.

    Re: Astros@Padres 8/17/07-8/19/07

Really, I understand the concept of trying to get top dollar.

I wouldn't share the philosophy, I'd rather play for my team of choice if I've already gotten to the point of having multi millions, but I comprehend it coming from someone else's perspective.

All I ask is that, if top dollar as per what the market dictates is truly your top priority...then just be up front with this. Don't feed us a bunch of nonsense about how you supposedly want to stay with the team you're with and how that's supposedly what you really want.

It just seems to me that if you really want to stay with the team and you're already a multi-millionaire you wouldn't let a few mil per year get in your way of staying with the team.

We heard the same thing with Drew Brees.

He was offered 10 mil per year....the only stipulation was that he had to start so many games to prove he rebounded well from his injury.

10 mil per and all you have to do is stay healthy for the season? I think that's pretty fair.

True the Saints offer was a helluva lot better financially and I don't blame a guy for taking the guaranteed money....but if he truly wanted to stay with the Chargers as much as he told the public he would have accepted AJ's offer.

In regards to the Drew Brees thing, I'm not as upset that he took the money as I am that he pretty much lied to us everytime he told the public that he "really wants to play (his) entire career as a Charger more than anything else".

I don't know if any of you guys listened to Chris Ello this afternoon, but his act is really starting to wear thing as far as I'm concerned. He's really starting to sound like a Sandy Alderson apologist. He kept saying "give this philosophy time". Give it time? How many World Series did Oakland win under that philosophy?

    I rest my case....

I'm fairly certain Sandy was the GM of this team

Padres.com's bio of him agrees with me

He then served as Oakland's General Manager from 1983-97

Loyalty goes both ways. When Peavy's time comes and they don't give him what he wants, he would be a fool not to go elsewhere. Any one of us would do the same thing. Peavy is a top five pitcher and deserves whatever he gets. Peavy's aren't just everywhere. Peavy cut them a deal once already and don't see him doing it again.

Reefer, where the hell have you been? Haven't seen you around lately.

On to Peavy, yes you're absolutely right, you can't find another Jake Peavy anywhere in the major leagues and you don't have one in your minor league system at this point either. I don't know if Jake or his agent will ask for the same kind of deal that Zito got, though they might, it's possible. Is he worth it? Absolutely he is.
