    Padres acquire Hairston for Rosales

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today acquired outfielder Scott Hairston from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitcher Leo Rosales. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

In 76 games for Arizona this year, the 27-year-old Hairston is hitting .222 (39-for-176) with 13 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 16 RBI, 21 runs scored and 19 walks. He has played 53 games in the outfield, including 42 starts in left field. Hairston is 3-for-17 as a pinch-hitter with one double, one home run, three RBI, three runs and three walks.

Hairston has a career Major League batting average of .238 (131-for-550) with 31 doubles, seven triples, 16 homers, 47 RBI, 62 runs and 41 walks in 201 games since making his debut with Arizona in 2004. He was the Diamondbacks' third-round selection in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Hairston attended high school at Canyon Del Oro in Tucson (Ariz.) before attending Central Arizona Junior College. He is the ninth member of his family to play professional baseball.

Rosales, 26, was placed on the disabled list June 7 with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his right hand. Prior to the injury, he was 1-1 with 14 saves and a 3.28 ERA (9 ER/24.2 IP) in 24 relief appearances with Triple-A Portland this year. He notched 27 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Rosales was the Padres' 20th-round selection in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft. He attended Cal State Northridge.

It's never an easy thing to get rid of a guy named "Leo", but Hairston's a good hitter.

Don't see how a .238 hitter is considered good but he does have the potential. Dbacks had no reason to wait.

LOL @ Hairston is a good hitter, how is someone who is a career .238 BA .293 OBP and hitting .222 with a .301 obp this year is considered "good hitter" is just hilarious.

He didn't get regular playing time, having to play in a crowded outfield in Arizona behind Byrnes, Quentin, Chris B. Young, etc. It's not easy sitting on the bench for the whole game and have your only opportunity to hit come up as a pinch-hitter late in the game when you're cold and haven't gotten any warmup. Have you ever actually seen the guy hit? He can mash.

In spring training, Hairston got regular playing time since Quentin was hurt then. Hairston hit 23-for-54 (.426) and had 6 homeruns and 17 RBI. In 22 games!

Dude can hittttt. Give him regular at-bats and he will hit.

Doesn't matter if your on the Bench, either you can hit or you cant, 04 he hit .248 and this year he's hitting a .222 you would think in four years a player would get better, he hasn't even shown any signs of that!

Needs playing time to be good?

I get it now. The Padres have been without an X. Nady/Ben Johnson type to ride the bench and have fans complain about how they need to start them more because they'll be a superstar if only they get regular playing time for some time now.

Good to see them go out and get a replacement.

They wouldn't be much different with him right now. They'd have him in LF with Milton in CF.
