On the wrong end, but it was a good series.......I think we got to see exactly what we're lacking as a team, and at the sametime, just how close we truly are to being a perinneal contender.......

I've concluded that we don't need a power hitter in this lineup.......we need two .300 hitting .370+OBP kind of guys..........we're just fine in the power dept. if we had a couple guys in this lineup hitting over .300 who could also get on base regularly

The problem with this team is we have no swagger. There isnt a single person on the team that steps up to the plate and scares you, every single one of them makes you wonder. When I watched the games this weekend I knew we werent going to win the series because the Bo Sox have a certian swagger that when each guy stepped to the plate it made you feel he was going to kill it, no one on our team does that, it actually left me feeling very deflated and wondering that even if we do make it to the post season again, will we be able to step up and do something.

Thats because they have these things called SUPERSTAR players.......thus you end up with a swagger......

We have a collection of stiffs surround our very good young core......coupled with a damn good rotation and bullpen....which is why I said we need two .300 hitting .370+OBP kind of guys......IMO that would add this swagger you're saying we lack.......and I totally agree that it's lacking

God I hate that word "swagger"

    What exactly is "swagger"?

It seems to me whenever it's used it's some word people make up to try and attribute a reason as to why one team is winning and another isn't when they can't find a real reason.

The Red Sox won because they out hit the Padres.

"moxy" is another one of those over used sports adjectives that I hate, for the same reason.

    swagger - Definitions from Dictionary.com

So, basically, you're saying if our players were more arrogant they'd hit the ball better?

I'd put it like this........if the players had a swagger, it would likely be due to them playing great baseball, or killing it while at bat.......which means we'd be hitting the ball more, so yes to answer your question, if they had a swagger they'd be playing better.......just not because of the swagger, it's the other way around

Based on what you're telling me, it's not "if they had swagger they'd be playing better" it's "If they were playing better they'd have swagger" which actually makes more sense to me.

I hate it when sports pundits try to say "these guys are winning because they have swagger!"

No, they're confident because they're winning, not the other way around.

Call it what you want HWood, but my point was made and understood by PFF. It is kind of an arrogance because they know when they step to the plate 2 things, they are going to get a hit and drive in a run, and the pitcher is afraid to pitch to him (so to speak). I think that everytime a Padre walks to the plate he is just as concerned that he wont get a hit as I the fan am, and not the other way around. I have zero confidence in anyone in the line up when they walk to the plate, and I think the players feel the same way.

You can see it in their eyes when they walk up there thinking this pitcher is my beatch and I am going to get a hit right now to prove it.

Is it arrogant to be confident, or do you hate that word too?
