Since that's not the case.....what? A bench comes in handy to fill holes and pinch hit and beyond that......what? I see it as spot on. No impact players and no help beyond '08. Just be thankful the Dodgers, Dbacks and Rockies didn't do much either.

Your implication was that the Padres did nothing but improve the bench and that this means they didn't improve the team or their chances to win.

That would be spot on if the bench, indeed, had zero impact on the team's ability to win.

Since that is not the case and the bench can be integral to a team's ability to win....especially in the NL....your assessment is not spot on.

You said that these moves don't really change anything...if they improve the Padres chances to win they change something. So if you don't think they change anything you are, at the very least, implying that it doesn't improve their chances to win...whether that was your intention or not.

Ok because you are getting lost. You improved your bench. Great job! The starters are lacking. Not a good job. Your bench can only do so much and don't win as many games as the starters. And once more, no impact players means more of the same. Nothing got this team over the top! Want to see how a good bench doesn't help that much, look at the '07 Giants!!!

In case people weren't paying attention to the Padres 1st half.........our bench played a huge role in our 1st half success.......so if you don't think upgrading a bench helps a team........I'd suggest you really don't know what you're talking about.

Did we need to address other areas.......of course.......we didn't
Did we need to address our bench.......hell yes........and we did

Its still possible to make a deal after the deadline......less likely, but possible still.........

You just got Hillenbrand and Hairston to go along with Bard, Cruz Jr., and Blum. The bench wasn't really a pressing need and the Padres needed more help elsewhere.

Hillenbrand is in Portland, Hairston is decent at best, and Blum sucks.

Mackowiak can play more positions than all 3 and Ensberg has shown in the past that he can be real good.

My original counter-argument, however, came after you, yourself, said the bench was improved by the moves that were just made....but turned around and implied that improving the bench (and thus the team's ability to win) doesn't change anything.

It was more of a conceptual statement that I was counter arguing.

Russell Branyan can do anything Ensberg can do. I don't think improving the bench pushes this team to the next level, yes you are correct in saying that. Maybe if this team got a good everyday second baseman, I would say something different but get a bunch of utility guys doesn't equal a division crown IMO.
