    Brian Lawrence on the return?

SignOnSanDiego.com > San Diego Padres -- Lawrence headed to Portland?

The right-handed sinker-baller is available and the Padres have apparently lost minor league pitcher Cesar Carrillo for the remainder of the season.

“It's looking more than likely that Carrillo will have elbow reconstruction surgery,” General Manager Kevin Towers said yesterday. “That leaves us short on starting pitching at (Triple-A) Portland.” Lawrence, who missed all of the 2006 season following shoulder surgery, was released this week by the Colorado Rockies and the Padres are contemplating offering him a minor-league contract.
“I talked to Grady (Fuson, the Padres' vice president of scouting and player development) about B-Law,” said Towers. “It would give us depth in starting pitching at Portland.”

When asked about Lawrence, Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley said: “I like Brian. He gets outs.”

Lawrence last night said he would prefer to sign on to a major league roster. “I have to see what's out there, but I'd always be interested in returning to the Padres,” he said.
I wouldn't mind it for a minor league deal.

I wouldn't either, he sucked ass before he left, but quite honestly he seems like a good enough guy, has major league experience, and could suck up innings for us if needed in long relief.

He was pretty good at first but fell apart in 2005.

Minor league contract is plenty for this guy......if he doesn't like it.....cya....and that's if we don't sign Latos and promote someone to fill Carillo's spot instead

It's not just Carillo's spot that needs filling.

We'd also have to fill (hopefully) Germano's spot after he (hopefully) is the one who's called up to fill in for Clay Hensley, who's going on the DL.

My money is on Thompson........but I'd rather see Germano also...especially since he's throwing so well right now......he's still so young at 26, and might be another KT diamond in the rough

    Germano's 24

The problem is, he's not on the 40 man roster, I think they'd have to make room.

I'd still like them to do that, but that's another factor to lead me to believe they'll call someone else up.

Well, they just traded Jack Cust to Oakland for a PTBNL, which frees up a spot on the 40 man roster.
