The right-handed sinker-baller is available and the Padres have apparently lost minor league pitcher Cesar Carrillo for the remainder of the season.
“It's looking more than likely that Carrillo will have elbow reconstruction surgery,” General Manager Kevin Towers said yesterday. “That leaves us short on starting pitching at (Triple-A) Portland.” Lawrence, who missed all of the 2006 season following shoulder surgery, was released this week by the Colorado Rockies and the Padres are contemplating offering him a minor-league contract.
“I talked to Grady (Fuson, the Padres' vice president of scouting and player development) about B-Law,” said Towers. “It would give us depth in starting pitching at Portland.”
When asked about Lawrence, Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley said: “I like Brian. He gets outs.”
Lawrence last night said he would prefer to sign on to a major league roster. “I have to see what's out there, but I'd always be interested in returning to the Padres,” he said.
