    MLB.com ranks Padres rotation #4

The Official Site of Major League Baseball: News: Major League Baseball News

No. 4 -- San Diego Padres
The Padres' rotation led the National League in ERA last year (4.10) and should be even better this time with Greg Maddux (15-14, 4.20 ERA, 210 innings last year) joining Jake Peavy (11-14, 4.09 ERA, 202 1/3), Chris Young (11-5, 3.46 ERA, 179 1/3), Clay Hensley (11-12, 3.71 ERA, 187) and veteran David Wells (3.49 ERA in five starts after coming over from Boston).
Also interesting to note: San Diego is the only NL team in their ranking of the top 5.

The Reds need to be number 1! Nah, this sounds about right. It is deserved.

The Reds could be up there in a year or two if they find two good pitchers to compliment Harang, Arroyo, and Homer Bailey with. (assumig, of course, Homer does as good as the hype says he will.)

Contingent of course if they can remain healthy which to me is the big question. Wells has been a bit injury prone the past few years.

    Oh trust me, Bailey will.

And welcome to the site reddenedbeard!

I agree with you as well, they definitely need to stay healthy.

reddendbeard has a legit concern with Wells.

He's 43 and spent plenty of time on the DL last year.

The other 4 don't have any significant history of injuries, Maddux, in fact, has quite the opposite in terms of his health history.

The 1997 (I believe) Seattle Mariners are the only team in history to go through an entire season with just 5 starting pitchers.
The White Sox only used 6 two years ago, which was also impressive.

Mike Thompson and Tim Stauffer should fill in well when needed.

They overrated the White Sox's rotation. Buerhle is coming off a disappointing season, Vazquez doesn't scare hitters anymore, and Gavin Floyd has been a bust.

True true .. most pitching doesn't last an entire season. Wells to me needs to be fresh as he can be by the end of the year when (hopefully) we are making the stretch run. He thrives on big games which is one of the obvious reasons he was brought in here.

Wells should last at least until the ASB.....at that point we will have Estes, Carillo, Thompson & Stauffer to draw from should the need come.....Wells will also not be asked to take on the role of anything more than a #5, which means he'll likely be on cruise control from the gates.....

I really don't see much of an issue with health at all.....Wells was good for 30+ starts since 1996.......and aside from last year had made 30+ since 2002....he's not in the cold of Boston, he's in the warmth of San Diego....so his nagging pains will likey subside....

Oh yah.....Estes, Carillo, Thompson & Stauffer are the guys IF we don't make a midseason trade using Linebrink to maybe get another starting arm.... which is very possible should the need arise

The Dodgers projected starter had a better ERA than last year's Padre ERA so I expect both the Dodgers and Padres to be close in that regard.
