    Padres/Marlins series thread...and a few more things

First, props to Refugee for picking up the ball on the Reds series.

I don't know the pitching match ups, so someone feel free to post them in a response. I think the Padres pichers will be Eaton-May-Peavy, but I might have Eaton and May backwards.

on other notes (since I don't feel like waiting for another "post new thread" window to open to state all this in) i'd like to see the recruiting step up, to the point where we...well you all can go back to gameday threads, even with me and Kobe gone.

On one last note, Padres related, I see that Tim Stauffer had a succesful major league debut today Hopefully the 5th starter "woes" is officially at an end, or at least once Woody comes back from the DL.

Peavy-Eaton-BLaw-Woody-Stauffer doesn't seem too bad...assuming Stauffer continues to pitch as good as he did post-1st inning today.

I agree with Stauffer the rotation looks much better.......I still think we need to go get a high quality arm still.......Woody just doensn't inspire much fear in opposing teams.....they are looking forward to games he's tossing in......and he's getting up their fast in age.......I'd like to be wrong here, but I just don't think I am.......

Hats off to Stauffer.....once he settled down, he looked great

you may be right in regards to Woody, you might not. But think about it like this...assuming Stauffer continues to pitch as good as he did in his debut (which, admittedly is still a big assumption) Woody as our 5 is definitely much better than our "#3" or "#4" (depending on how you rank BLaw..)

Not that i'd be opposed at all to acquiring another arm, I just wouldn't see it as a huge demand as I would be without Stauffer (again, going off the assumption that he continues to pitch well)

    Padres

I agree with you completly.....Stauffer can be the savior to the rotation as far as filling a void, if he remains consistant......but I don't want the Padres to wait around to see IF Woody will be ok coming off this injury, before they make a move......we're only two games out right now....the Dodgers are sliding, the Giants are in a death rattle, and AZ is making a move, and they kicked our butts badly.......we need to be proactive and not reactive like in the past 35 years.........we need to make a move to get the arm we need, and I'm not talking about another old guy that might fill the void.........I'm talking about trading some prospects and maybe a starter, and paying the money without surpassing the $80-85 mil. mark that Sandy Alderson himself said a mid market team should be around....and lets run away with this division now.....before it's too late again. I do think that our team as a whole is not in need of a shake up, but we do need a proven, young, veteran pitcher that can be placed behind Peavy, and before Eaton, giving us three high quality starts in a row.

Proactive is the key to winning.......they have yet to figure this out.......last year at the Allstar break the Padres were in a perfect position to make a move, and didn't. This cost us probably the division and the playoffs for sure. I'm tired of bandaids !

    1. Peavy
    2. young, proven arm here
    3. Eaton
    4. BLaw
    5. Stauffer

    or

    1. Peavy
    2. Eaton
    3. Woody
    4. BLaw
    5. Stauffer

    if Woody comes back strong......

Death rattle, that's funny. We are only 3 games out but yet in a death rattle. Hilarious. No one is running away with this *****.

the problem with the line of attack you suggest is what to do with Woody when he returns. Woody has had 1 bad start, maybe 2 (and that first one was in Colorado) before going on the DL. He may be old, he may not be what we want for the top 2 or 3 of our staff...but he doesn't have to be. A rotation of Peavy, Eaton, BLaw, Stauffer, Woody is perfectly acceptable to me this year, and i'm ok with being reactive in this scenario...because there's no real reason to believe that Woody will be so bad as to warrent making some last ditch move now to replace him...IMO

and one last thing, I guarantee you this, if the Padres were to, for whatever reason, go out and acquire a "#2" quality starting pitcher we'll be seeing Stauffer go back to AAA and Woody still in the rotation..

I read Jason Schmidt's on the DL...but I don't know for how long. If he's out for a long time the Giants may not be in this thing for too long. Although no one's running away with it in any case.

And even if Schmidt's out for a long time, it wouldn't be the first time I thought the Giants didn't have enough talent to win after key injuries and due to individuals aging, yet they find a way to win somehow >.<

    Padres

....or you'll see Blaw get moved in that transaction.....I can understand how you'd think the Padres pitching staff is set once Woody comes back, providing he's healthy........but do you really see that staff as enough to get you through the playoffs ?? I sure don't..... and I'd really like to say otherwise, but they aren't strong enough IMO.

Please let them prove me wrong.......I have no problem being wrong

Didn't think about that...i'd be perfectly ok with that. (although that'd leave us with a hole to fill by 2007 or 06, and it'd be putting a lot of faith in Stauffer)

    Peavy
    ??? (filled via BLaw trade)
    Eaton
    Woody
    Stauffer

next season could be the same if Woody proves to still have it, otherwise we have that hole...definitely have it by 07

But every team has holes to fill at the end of the season, that's what the offseason is for

exactly how I was thinking.......the however is that at the end of '06 we have some guys ready to come up and play OF positions or wherever they are needed, and Giles & Klesko are likely nolonger here freeing up massive amounts of $$$ to fill those spot however we need to......I'm more interested in seeing us handle the issues at hand......I would like to have two post season runs by the end of the 06 season .......not get there and say "damn we shoulda done this, and done that".....like we did last year.

    Padres

I didn't get to see the game but I did catch that play at home where LoDuca blocked Burroughs (or was it Sweeney).....What a great play that was. I LOVE the great plays at the plate when the catcher hangs in and gets the job done. I always liked LoDuca too.

And yet another win for the Padres today. What's that? 12 of the last 14, or something around there? That tirade in the locker room Bochy had sure seems to have done the trick. I actually got to watch today's game cuz they showed it on AFN (Armed Forces Network) They almost never show Padre games, but we lucked out today. Peavy had a great game and finally gets another W to show for it.

Tomorrow should be BLaw's turn, I presume.

One thing I noticed today, Darrel May was warming up at one point...does this mean Woody's due back soon?

Schmidt is scheduled to be back early next week if I am not too hungover and am thinking straight. We have a favorable schedule and like you said, no one is running away with this.
