They don't have to sweep a 4 game series to make the playoffs.

Neither the Dodgers nor the Phillies are going to win every game from hear on out till the end of the season.

Not that it wouldn't help them a lot.

I keep thinking back to 2002 when Tomko would pitch 7 shutout innings one game and give up 12 runs the next.

I'm thinking 92 wins is going to be required if the Phillies don't let up........and if so.........yes we will need a 4 games sweep of either Pitt or the Brews, and IMO Pitt is more realisitic........to go with this we also have to win each series the rest of the way........11-3 the rest of the way......where do you see those 11 coming from ?

    4 w/ Pitt - Has to be 4
3 w/ CO - they own us this year, 2 wins would be huge for us
    3 in SF - 3 game sweep
4 in MIL - 2-4 would be huge for us since MI will be playing for a playoff spot also

So sweep Pitt and sweep SF again........a series win vs. CO, and a split in MI........otherwise.......I'm not so sure we're going to see the post season with the way the teams that tracked us down are playing........just trying to stay realistic here

I realize you're trying to be realistic, and I'm in no way trying to suggest that a loss at this point in the season doesn't sting.

But, in my own effort to be realistic, I realize that neither the Phillies nor the Dodgers are going to win every game from here on out, and thus one loss in a 4 game series is not the end of the season, as stating "They have to win all 4" suggests.

    Re: Pirates@Padres 9/17/07-9/20/07

I hear you.........I'm just thinking we need to get our W's against the teams we should smoke.........and Pitt is one of those teams IMO........

If Cassel and Tomko have good starts, even just solid...... our bats hitting in this bandbox will only be a good thing for us right now........

So IMO we cannot lose a game in Pitt.......I think all 4 are that important, cause when we play CO, it's very possible we could lose a game at least.....and when we play MI the same thing applies.........so we need to rack up the wins vs. suck teams like Pitt and SF while we can

Well, the thing is, I also realize the Padres aren't going to win every game from here till the end of the season either.

They need to stay hot, win every series, and yes they more than likely need to win at least 9 or 10 of those last 14.

They'd finish 10-4 in the last 14 games if they only lose 1 game per series.

Losing more than 1 game in any of the series is not acceptable and we'd be on the same page in that regard.

    Whatever, though.

I certainly don't want to sound like I'm arguing against the Padres getting a sweep.

    That'd certainly help matters immensely.

yup.......and I see us losing more than 1 game in maybe two series........which is the reason I feel so strongly about us beating up the two crap teams we're facing in Pitt and SF

We wont sweep Pitt. Sorry to be a downer, but a 4 game sweep is hard to do and the odds are against you. If we lose 1 it will be against Gorzelany IMO. He is a very good pitcher who we have not seen much, if any, of, and with the way Mad Dog pitched last game, it could haunt him and the team.

    3-1 is more realistic IMO.

I'm still holding out hope that we win the division. D-Backs showed weakness this weekend and if they can lose 3 more than us for the rest of the season, we win it right?
