Well the FO thinks that Sledge is a legit player if given a chance....I guess we'll know soon enough....He was highly touted once, and has been injured a few times....his one good season was his rookie season....so we'll just have to hope he's a diamond in the rough

Dave Roberts was a diamond in the rough, and he finally got his shot at about the same age

Mark Loretta didn't really do much till his 30s.

Loretta had a lot of good years with the Brewers well before his 30's.

Sledge really hasn't had a chance to play full time, though. The best compare to me is Brady Clark, stuck as a backup, got a shot to start, and put together three solid-average years as a major league CF.

I like the guy, and I always have(I think I won the Ben Johnson v. Sledge argument, Pads), it's just a matter of him staying healthy and getting the shot.

I'd prefer an established corner OF with proven power ( who wouldn't ) and since we have the pieces to move to get one, its my choice to do that....but if they go with Sledge, and he pans out to be above avg, while keeping Linebrink, then not only will our rotation be tops in the NL our Bullpen will be also....that's pretty huge and can help so so batting out greatly

All I know is that if Sledge plays as horribly in the OF as he did last year I will not be a happy Padres fan.

Amen! And Sludge is a moneyball type of player, .400 obp. And he used to have wheels before the hamstring problems.

Lets hoep they are right because I just don't see alot of good left fielders available for trade or on the FA market left.

It will be interesting to see who is not tendered on the 15th and which players DONt file for arbitration..

Yes, that about expresses my opinion.

I can't honestly say I'm thrilled either about the FO claiming we needed a big bat for that position, but the offseason isn't over I guess. I still don't see why we simply didn't just give Ben Johnson a shot, considering he hasn't been all that bad at the major league level thus far.

Ben Johnson is overrated by Padre fans.

That said, if I had to choose between Sledge and giving Ben Johnson a shot, i'd choose the latter.

I just don't think he'd be the lock that others feel he would've been.
