    Offer made to M. Giles

    Get'er done KT.......get'er done

    December 14, 2006

General Manager Kevin Towers said he made a contractual offer yesterday to second baseman Marcus Giles, the former Braves regular who became a free agent on Tuesday night. The proposal is believed to be worth $3 million to $4 million.

I would rather see us offer 4-5M/year to him....I believe this kid still has a decade left in him.... he's only 28, and coming off a nagging injury, could be gold for us for years....

Towers recognizes that the injury isn't the only thing Marcus is coming off of, hence Atlanta's abrupt disposal.

    Marcus Boone or Marcus Giles.

Could be.....I'm not going to argue the possible roid use.....stands to reason that many were taking something....but he's never been a big power guy, more of a gap hitter.....so Petco is taylor made for him, IF he gets his game back

If Giles goes anywhere, I would like to see him in San Diego with his brother.

I believe that's where he will end up being that it has been rumored most of the offseason that the Padres had been interested in acquiring him from the Braves.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

According to what I've been hearing, the Padres could have this deal wrapped up, if not by Friday, they'll have it done on Monday.

Will the Padres do what the '79 Pirates did for a team song--"We are Family". One big happy family. I think the Padres will benefit in this move. Both Giles are hard nosed, gritty players. They may not have the most talent, but what talent they have they leave it on the field. I like those kind of players.

I like and fully support Giles, no matter where he goes.

Hope he signs with the Pads, they're a good organization with an excellent fan base.

Marcus Giles close to joining Padres

Marcus, 28, likely will agree to a one-year deal and possibly a club option. His salary will be significantly less than the $5.5 million that he might have earned in salary arbitration with the Braves, who declined to offer him a contract.

From what I've been hearing, it's a 1 year with an option for a 2nd, looks like anywhere between $2.5m - $3m for the 1st year but not sure what the 2nd year would be, maybe $3.5m - $4m.

They're going to see how he plays this season, if he does well enough, I would expect an extension around July/August 2007.
