Doesn't Adkins have a pretty bright future as well? Considering Bell has a 4.92 career ERA, this deal looks bad for you guys. Although Ring looks to have talent, could he be much better than Adkins?

I would be too. I htought the Pads had high hopes for Barfield, then you get a chance at a replacement for Giles, but he will be a FA after this season. Now this...

Need anymore proof how much Padre fans overrated Ben Johnson?

I'm a bit baffled at this move, myself, none-the-less

The offseason is young, so I still have a no opinion on it

It is young, the however is that we seem to nolonger be in the running for Soriano, Lee, Zito, Iwamura, and ARam is gone......these were the major targets this year for many teams including us.....and we appear to be on the outside for all of these guys now...... young offseason or not, it's not a pleasant view....

Now we're looking at guys like
    JD Drew......12.5M ughs
    Burrell.........9M ughs
Figgins........DR is better, older, but better
    Weaver.......7M ughs

come on.......this is rapidly becoming a joke offseason.......they need to toss us a bone if they want us to keep up the faith....

The fact that the Angels had already offered us McPherson for Johnson a year ago really pisses me off.

We need to sign Lee, man it. Can someone tell me why NOT Lee? Is it because he's right handed? Or because he's in the top 5 in RBIs last year? Or because his HRs have even gone up in the past few seasons? I'm sick of his crap, sign a goddamn power threat so I can stop worrying; if you take our roster as it is now and simply sign Lee + Nomar/Walker I'd be happy.

Though I still think we're gonna make a run for Zito either way.

I'm for Lee......but I think he of all the big name FA is the most overvalued, and thus will be the most overpaid, and least likely to be worth his contract....they are talking about him getting around 60M.....I don't think we'd give him a 5/12M.....nor do I think we'd give him 4/15M.....but who knows.....You are right about one thing......they need to sign a HUGE bat and stop screwing around

I'd be all for Burrell and Figgins.

Not so much Weaver and definitely not Drew.

I pretty much agree with your outtake.

I just always make it a point to wait and see before I make any real opinions

How 'bout this rumor, being repoted on other boards...

Los Angeles Times (registration required): "Figgins, who last season had run-ins with teammates and Manager Mike Scioscia, who questioned his effort, also could be traded for bullpen help. A straight-up swap with the San Diego Padres — Figgins for reliever Scott Linebrink — is possible
I do this in a second to have him play 2nd for us....and only 2nd......give him a chance to become a single position player and rake the triples in petco ?

Bell and Ring are nothing special, but they can potentially make Scott Linebrink available in a deal for an outfielder, and Johnson is pretty much just a guy who you throw out there versus lefties and never again. Adkins is like, 29 years old, and even in his prime he's not really all too worth an MLB ready, younger reliever in return. Padres will probably win this deal depending on what it means for the fate of Linebrink, but no idea how Pads fans will feel about the prospect of dumping Scott.

The Mets side of this meanwhile works out fairly well, too, because they've now got a very good left-field platoon (Chavez vs. righties, though he's not spectacular, plus he's got great speed and superb defense) and they pick up a guy they clearly like more than either Bell or Ring.

Linebrink was nothing before he got here and Balsey rewired his head.....Same with a number of pitchers......so I trading a 5th OFer for a couple guys with upside who might only need to also be rewired, is probably what they are thinking here........I just don't want this to be a "major move" for us....
