it's a non issue. He was only signed for 500K (I wish I worked in a business where 500k/year was refered to as "only"...)

I agree, I even implied the same thing when I posted about it in the offseason thread.

Just nothing to really worry about too much when they didn't spend that much of the payroll on it.

I must be missing something. I just don't see where the Padres have spent much of the money that went away after last season.

    The Guys that went away
    Klesko and his $9 million
    Park and his $15 million
    Woody and his $7 million
    Roberts and his $2.25 million
    Piazza and his $2 million
    Williamson and his $2 million
    Estes and his $1 million
    Embree and his $1 million
Wells and the $1.25 million he cost the Padres last year
    Total = $40 million PLUS

    Guys Signed
    Brocail - 1 yr $500k
    Bum ( I mean Blum) - 1 yr $900k
Maddux - 1 yr at $10 million with a PLAYER option for $8 million
    Giles - 1 yr at $3.75 with a team option for $4 million+
    Cruz - 1 yr at 750k?
    Total - a tick under $16 million

    Arbitration Eligible
Walker - Expected to get $4 million plus as a backup
Greene - A SS with 15-20 hr power will get $3-4 million or more
Bard - Certainly 8-10 times last years salary
Total Increase - about $10 million

    The Guys They Traded For
    Brown
    Kouzmanoff
    Bell
    Ring
**Roughly equal in salary to **
    The Guys they Traded Away

    Adkins
    Barfield
    Johnson

The Bottom Line - They still have another $14 million PLUS to spend just to get back to LAST YEARS level of spending.

AND you will be paying more to see the Padres in Person next season.

Next Years Padres Team As It Stands Today
    1b - Gonzo
    2b - Giles
    SS - Greene
    3B - Branyan/Kouzmanoff (Kouzmanoff has not played much 3b in 3 yrs)
LF - Cruz/Sledge/ and the rest of the platoon
    CF - Cameron
    RF - Giles
    C - Bard/Bowen

Bench - Walker, Blum, and the rest of the platooners

    SP - Peavy
    SP - Young
    SP - Maddux
    SP - Hensley
    SP - Thompson/Carrillo

    RP - Linebrink
    RP - Meredith
    RP - Brocail
    RP - Bell
    RP - Ring
    RP - Brown

    CP - Trevor

SO, Where exactly have the Padres spent much money?

Padres Look for Branyan at 3b

Look for Branyan to get significant time at 3B. Kouzmanoff has not played much 3b in over 2 years because of injury. He was the minor league DH of the year and played almost every game at DH last season and only played DH for the Indians in his short call up.

    pitcher spot......

wishful thinking I'm sure........but could this be our possible lineup's output ??

    Peavy----15-7.......3.14 ERA.......200+IP........210k's
    CY-------17-7.......3.30 ERA.......190 IP.........180k's
    Maddux---14-6......3.89 ERA.......210 IP.........150k's
    Hensley---14-8......4.20 ERA.......190IP..........140k's
    Wells-----12-10.....4.55 ERA.......190IP..........105k's

How do you all like my dream so far ???
Biggest stretch is Kouz being ROY. Chances are that he will be a defensive liability and play in a platoon with Branyan, who is a defensive liability himself.

More likely it will be more like this
    B Giles - .275/15/90 with 100 plus BB
A Gon - .300/30/100 (This kid can rake)
Bard - .270/15/70 (throw in Bowen and maybe 25hr from Catcher)
Kouz - .245/12/54 (throw in Branyan and maybe 25hr from 3b)
    Cameron - .265/25/80
    LF Platoon - .260/15/70
Greene - .275/25/80 (very realistic if he can stay healthy)

    Peavy - 17-7 with 3.60 era and 220 k
    Young - 20-5 with 3.25 era
    Maddux - 14-14 with a 3.80 era
    Hensley - 12-9 with a 4.20 era
    Thompson/Carrillo/others - 7-5 with a 4.50 era

But then I like your (drug induced?) dream better than what is more probable. So lets all hope your dream comes true.

Padres I think you BOTH are missing a guy who may be better than Both of those guys.

Thompson is also ahead of Stauffer in the "go to" role as well....Stauffer will be bumped further down when Carillo is "ready".....You should get used to the idea that Stauffer will either be traded, never play, or only play if we have major injuries at the same time in our rotation..

As far as Branyan goes......I don't think anyone is "sold" on him, but take the time to go look up the OPS of all the current candidates, and then tell me what you think ? He's shown the most production at the ML level and that's why I'm suggesting him....Not because I think he's the best player.....due strictly on production
    What about Cesar Carrillo?

    88. CESAR CARRILLO, rhp, Padres
"Carillo has an electric fastball, he locates it and he's aggressive. And his curveball can be really good, too."
    --Padres scouting director Bill Gayton
    ETA: 2007

Isnt he the only Padres Pitching Prospect in the Baseball America Top 100?

Isnt he the guy all the pundits were saying would make the team with a September call up LAST SEASON?

Did he do anything in the Minors to lose any ground?

And don't overlook a kid named Jared Wells.

And Sean Thompson will probably make the Padres pen at some point this year but he is really a starter AND he is a LEFTY.

Nope....haven't missed him.....he's not going to be ready for opening day, but should be ready come the ASB....and he'll be 10x's the pitcher Stauffer could only dream of becoming....

And this was more about Johnbr thinking Stauffer could be the Staff ace of the Padres or anyone else for that matter, and that he's already better than CY and Peavy.....I was trying to help explain to him how and where his brain was shorting out....but he was incapable of listening....

He also thought Burroughs could hit like Gwynn ..... should have been enough to halt any conversation with him, but I was already involved....

Probably red wine or just sheer bordom...no drugs....

I think Kouz is going to be open some eyes with the bat....and while .305/25/94 might be wishful thinking....the only thing I would lower is the HR's....I think this kid will hit over .300 and just hammer the ball....You are right about his defense though...it's suspect....but that's an area that can be improved upon....defense is a learned skill, so hopefully he's working hard to get better....

Carrillo was shut down last season due to injury and, correct me if I'm wrong, but only had 1-2 starts in AAA before they shut him down. He needs more time before he gets the call up to the bigs.
