Nice to see Klesko talking in the third person.

    San Diego swan song?

Klesko and several others could be playing elsewhere next season

    By Bill Center

    October 6, 2006

The reality struck Ryan Klesko in the ninth inning yesterday.

“I was sitting in the dugout when I realized this could be it for Ryno in San Diego,” he said.

“I hadn't thought about it at all and there it was. If we don't sweep in St. Louis . . . this could have been it.”

The end of a seven-year run with the Padres.

    And Klesko's not alone.

Dave Roberts, Woody Williams, David Wells and Chan Ho Park, among others, become free agents after the World Series. And the club has options on Mike Piazza and Mike Cameron.

Some Padres see sweeping changes on the horizon. They believed the only way to stave off that possibility was to win the National League West (accomplished) and go deep into the playoffs (now highly problematical).

“The fact this could have been my last game here as a Padre crossed my mind,” acknowledged Roberts, who was raised a Padres fan in North County. “The only way to ensure that won't happen is to start winning.”

Said Williams: “I haven't given that a thought. We need to concentrate on getting back into this series.”

Piazza said any concerns about his future are fodder for the offseason. Cameron also said he hasn't thought about the possibility of moving on other than: “I know I'll be playing somewhere next season.”

Considering what we know we'll keep....how much is locked up in contracts for next year already ? Also assuming that this team continues it's current path of upping slightly the payroll since leaving the Q.... Where does the money go, and how much is really left to spend in the FA market after taking care of the existing guys ?

IMO.....Resign Roberts.....make a deal to get ARam from Chi at just about any cost but our current rotation break up, so long as he agrees to sign here......sign Zito if you can get him for around $12M wishful I know, but not out of the realm of possiblity either.....and keep our bench intact....also lock up AGon before his arbi year to avoid a mess

I would think hard about taking a chance on Mulder as well.......there is a good chance he'll comeback healthy, and could be had for cheap....Wells is too old....Woody would make a nice #5 if Carillo isn't ready.....but I'm not sold on the big fatty anymore....eventually time will come calling

I would not resign a 44 year old David Wells.

I'd be reluctant to resign a 40 year old Woody Williams.

Yes, please do resign Dave Roberts.

Trade Giles and sign another outfielder as well.

(although there will be 2 SP slots to fill.)

Would any of you be against bringing in A-Rod to play 3B next year? The Yankees would naturally be paying part of his salary (say $10 million or so), which is already partly being paid by the Texas Rangers ($8 million of it or so). Padres would be left with having to pay maybe $7 million annually.

Sure they would trade Arod to the Pads if a certain guy named Peavy was involved. And the way Zito has been pitching and probably will continue pitching in the playoffs, he will get more than $12 mil per year.

Yeah, the Yankees would ask for way too much for ARod.

The Yankees would be lucky to get Chris Young for A-Rod, much less Peavy.

Would the Padres ever do that? No. And if they would they are a bunch of idiots. Not to mention, the Yankees would want more than just Peavy too.

Of course the Pads would never do that and that was my point. The Yankees moving Arod would be next to impossible.
