Nobody's saying throw in the towel because one guy hired Boras, we're simply saying that Zito's probably no longer the wisest option because he, unlike others perhaps, would come overpriced.

It's bad business to focus on one guy and give him whatever it takes to bring him in when you have other options.
Agreed, but I just don;t seeall these other pitchers you guys are talking about. Granted, I'm not going to go searching for next year's free agents, but I don't remember hearing of any being as valuable and Padre-compatible as Zito would be. We need a lefty ace, Zito needs San Diego sun and surf; it's a match made in heavan, well worth a large sum.

Zito was Padre compatable....until he hired Boras and showed he cares more about the money.

Yup, none even close to Zito's level of long term value and stardom.

But a lot of them can get the job done at a more fair price...a more fair price that will allow us to hold onto some of our own when the time comes.

And you're smoking something if you're telling me John Smoltz isn't dominant.

    John Smoltz is dominant.

But if you think he's going to be dominant pitching at age 40 in 2007, you're smoking a whole lot of something.

Hasn't exactly been dominant this year - just a nice starter.

I'd imagine he's not going to hold up through the end of 2006, and it's probably unlikely he'll even pitch through another year at all.

You might be right but he's not the only one on the list.

Furthermore the Padres currently have the best pitching staff in the NL, 2nd best in the majors WITHOUT Barry Zito. Starting Pitching is hardly their biggest need, they don't need to throw the biggest bulk of the money coming off the books at that position.

I say resign Chan Ho Park at a reasonable price (2 years, 5 mil with an option sounds ok) and sign either Mark Mulder, Mike Mussina, Greg Maddux, or Andy Pettite.

Yeah, I'm not arguing with the basic point - Zito is unnecessary to a team with Chris Young and Jake Peavy at the top of the rotation, they need to focus more on getting a solid third for the playoffs who isn't Woody Williams and filling out the lineup with some more talent.

That's why I said long term value, since Smoltz is already nose diving this season.

I agree on the Chan Ho signing also, though I imagine him asking for a lot more than he's worth. If the price is right though, I really like Park as a fifth, but maybe that's just my bias in that I love watching him pitch. His balls fly around more than Ron Jeremy.

Smoltz can't go on dominating Leo, just look at David Wells and Randy Johnson. Maddux is almost there too.

you are probably right, and he wouldn't be my first choice, but I can counter argue and tell you to look at Clemens, Jamie Moyer, and Kenny Rogers. (not to mention Greg Maddux)

but, that's all besides the point anyways.

I think he is. I don't think the list I found was complete.
