We take the first game. The next one seems to be a good matchup.

That was a great game to watch........we squandered too many opportunities though, we can't expect to win against good teams very often, and not execute....

opportunities WILL be squandered in pretty much any baseball game you watch by both teams.

It's the numerous amounts of times the Padres generally do it that makes it stick in our heads and cause such a bad taste in our mouth when we see it done.

In the case of yesterday's game, the opportunities lost, while annoying at the time of the occurance, are overall acceptable because all in all they came through when needed and got the W.

Yesterday's loss aside the A's are the hottest team in baseball right now, and they're in first place.

They would be absolute morons to trade Zito, free agent or not.

That's been the talk in the media......while I agree with you.....Beane told reporters that regardless of where they were in the standings he'd be traded to ensure they would get something in return for him, instead of letting him walk like they did Giambi and others.... That was a quote read on extra sport 1090 yesterday morning.... take it for what it is....

Beane said that or someone quoted him as saying that?

If it's the latter, then it's a misquote...what he said in something I saw was that where they are in the standings doesn't mean he might not be traded...not that he will be traded as you just said.

I've also seen more articles saying that Zito isn't going anywhere. Whatever, it's all bullshit and no one knows until something does or doesn't happen. I am 97.456783% sure he won't get traded...someone is going to have to overwhelm Beane, which would need to include a young pitcher already in the majors, a young hitter in the majors, and a prospect or two...seriously...and no one is going to give that up unless they think they can sign him or that they for sure will win the World Series (which no one could know anyway)

I tend to agree with you on the misquote idea.......without hearing it from his mouth it's hard to know what contex it was in or what was truly said....but that's what was reported on 1090 sports.....

I think it's a realistic possiblity to think that the A's wont just let him walk without getting something for him...... I also don't think he's going to bring very much considering he's a FA at the end of the season....I would think teams wont give up the world for a rental, and possible sign.....

But as you said "...it's all bullshit and no one knows until something does or doesn't happen..." That I fully agree with

I tried to find the article where I read what I am almost positive that they "quoted", but a quick search didn't yield anything. I am almost certain it was a Toronto paper where I saw it...and it said exactly what you said that they said in the first part (about the standings), but it most definitely didn't say Barry will be traded...it was just stating that the standings wouldn't be the determining factor. Beane recently said:

A's GM Billy Beane, who acknowledges the unlikelihood the team can retain Zito as a free agent, has been down this road. He hung on to Jason Giambi and Miguel Tejada, only to lose them as free agents.

"We will hold on to" Zito, Beane said, "unless, in some shape or form, an offer comes along that makes you a better team. It's hard to imagine that."

to be fair, it didn't take major league talent to woo Tim Hudson or Mark Mulder away from Beane.

that said, the circumstances with Zito are a bit different in that the A's are in a playoff hunt right now, vice the offseason.

well, the Hudson trade will go down as sucking as Meyer is hurt again...

We got Dan Haren in the Mulder trade and he has pitched better than Mulder. Plus Calero to help the pen, but you're right...the add on piece was Barton
