Hey Reefer, answer this question for me....why does ESPN spend so much time following Barry Bonds' HR chase and only mention ONCE that Trevor Hoffman is also in a All Time record chase? Funny thing is, Trevor is closer to his All Time record(443 ->478 ) than Barry Steroids is to the HR record(714 -> 755).

Hey FrmFresnan, why the hell are you asking me? Am I somehow affiliated with ESPN? If I am, you should have told me years ago because ESPN would be 100x better. If I had to guess, maybe because the all-time homerun record is a lot bigger than the all-time saves record. Maybe because Hoffman will most likely be surpassed six years after he retires.

Passed by who? Rivera? The way he's pitched this year, he's not getting anywhere close to Trevor. Also, Trevor still has the remainder of this year plus, I believe, 2 more years to close games for the Padres. Let's say he averages 40 saves over the next 3 years, that record is going to stand for quite some time.

Benitez has been back for a while. The Giants just haven't had any real save chances. And yes Trevor will be passed by the influx of saves over the past few years, that's why I gave a six year window.

I think it's possible for Trevor to be surpassed, mainly because saves have become more "important" as of late.

The only thing I can't think of is by whom, as it seems every time there's a flash in the pan closer who looks great he drops off 2 or 3 years later.

I thought for sure Gagne would pass him eventually, but so much for that now.

Billy Wagner has a good shot with the Mets. They are breeding closers now!

Records are meant to fall, to guys that deserve to break them.....He'll be top dog for a while is all that matters.....if it lasts 5 years or 25 years he'll still be remembered as the "best of alltime" until the next person to wear that crown surfaces.....

Unless Wagner learns how to throw more than a fastball, he won't get anywhere close. He hasn't exactly been automatic this year has he?

LOLOLOLOL He hasn't been automatic but still has 10 saves and will get 40+ with the wat the Mets play. And if you only think Wagner throws a fastball, you have never seen him pitch and don't need to argue against him. Hoffman has maybe two more years after this season (one for certain). I still can't believe you asked me the original question.

Reefer, actually I have seen him pitch. Is Wagner not known for throwing that fastball over any other pitch he may have? Yes, Wagner has 10 saves, but he also has 3 blown saves and a very bad 1/3 of an inning against the Yankees when he gave up 4 runs. He's also not a young guy anymore, he'll be 35 in July and unless he averages 40 saves over the next 5 years, if he pitches that long, he's not touching Trevor's record.

Wagner's only shot IMO is if Hoffy can't go two more years......if Hoffy goes two more, then I don't think he's inline to take over......but there are a slew of mid 20somethings now saving games, that will probably all make a run at whatever mark Hoffy leaves behind....
