    Rotation vacancy unresolved: As to the matter of who will replace Williams when his turn in the rotation comes up Wednesday night in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, the club is withholding its decision.

    Speculation centers on Mike Thompson getting elevated from Portland, where the 25-year-old right-hander has gone 5-0 with a 3.79 ERA in seven starts as the Beavers' ace. Sweeney, who has been brilliant in middle relief, is another possibility.

    "Our options are to put one of our 'pen guys there or bring somebody up," Bochy said. "More than likely, we'll bring somebody up."

    Tim Stauffer, who made 14 starts with the Padres last season and was 3-6 with a 5.33 ERA, has struggled to find a groove at Portland, where he is 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA in seven starts.

    I think Sween is the better option, plus they say he's got better stuff than Hensley, and we all know Clay has been pitching pretty well.
