Pirates to announce extension with Wilson

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pittsburgh Pirates will announce at a 4 p.m. ET press conference that they have agreed to terms with shortstop Jack Wilson on a long-term contract extension.
The deal is believed to be for three years and $20 million and will keep Wilson under contract with the Pirates through the 2009 season.

Wilson, 27, has been Pittsburgh's starting shortstop since making the jump from Double-A to the big leagues in 2001. He was named to the 2003 All-Star team and earned selection as a 2003 National League Silver Slugger Award winner after batting .308 with 201 hits, 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. In his five-year big league career, Wilson has batted .263 with 35 home runs and 245 RBIs.

A defensive stalwart, Wilson has finished as the runnerup in the NL Gold Glove Award voting each of the last four seasons.

Pirates agreed to terms with shortstop Jack Wilson on a three-year, $20.2 million contract extension with an option for 2010.
Wilson was already signed for $4.6 million this year and he would have been arbitration eligible at season's end, so the Pirates already controlled him for two years. This is not going to work out as poorly as the Pat Meares contract, but there just wasn't any good reason to commit to the 28-year-old for four years. Wilson receives a $600,000 signing bonus and salaries of $5.25 million in 2007, $6.5 million in 2008 and $7.25 million in 2009. well when your the pirates and your fan base *****es you never keep any of your own players, they had to pick someone and wilson is it for now. oh well at least he's not a defensive liability.

Obviously, I have no problem with Jack's D. The problem is, after his last extension(before last season, after his career year in '04), he posted his worst OBP since his rookie year. In addition, his career OPS is .672. Aye.
