Rookie Zach Duke was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday by the Pittsburgh Pirates because of a sprained left ankle.

Duke (6-0) was hurt running the bases Tuesday, and the roster move was retroactive to Wednesday. He is eligible to be activated Sept. 8.

Pittsburgh purchased the contract of left-hander Paul Maholm, their first-round pick in the 2003 amateur draft, from Triple-A Indianapolis.

That stinks for him as he's been pitching really well.

I don't know. This could be for the best. We get to take a look at Maholm and lower the innings of Duke. He's going to be huge if we're going to have success next year, we don't need another pitcher with arm problems(Burnett, JVB).
