Pittsburgh Pirates Top 20 Prospects for 2012 - Minor League Ball

Here's a list from John Sickels who I respect more than most who do this kind of thing. It's good to see a lot of good pitching in the Pirates top 10.

    Re: Pirates Top Prospects 2012

Sickels used to work for either TPA or Prospectus back in the day, I think. I was on that site, couldn't find the top 10 link for this year though. Thanks, LTR.

Also, if anyone has the Baseball America book, and would like to add the 11-30 guys from there, it'd be much appreciated.

Stetson Allie in first start for Hagerstown...
    1/3 IP, 0 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP, 2 Wild Pitch.

    Very, very, awesome.

    Jameson Tailon this season:
    Start 1: L, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
    Start 2: ND, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
    Start 3: ND, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
    Start 4: ND, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

    Gerritt Cole this season
    Start 1: ND, 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
    Start 2: ND, 3 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
    Start 3: ND, 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
    Start 4: L, 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Looks like Tailon is in better shape, thus far. Cole is still seemingly getting acclimated to pro ball, which is fine.

    Re: Pirates Top Prospects 2012

The Pirates have added concensus(Mock draft) #1 pick to the prospect arsenal, with the pick of Stanford RHP Mark Appel.

If we can get him signed, he may be able to join Tailon and Cole in AA when the promotion comes, and hopefully fill out what looks to be a great rotation in 2-3 years.

Best guess: Boras effect, and a lot of teams expected him to go before they picked.

In another news, Stetson Allie(waste of an arm #2,419,777 in major league history.), is moving to 3rd base.

Allie was a pretty damn good hitter if I recall correctly.

    Re: Pirates Top Prospects 2012

Was projected as a 3rd round pick as a hitter, but he wasn't worth paying to stay away from college there.

We're supposedly starting him at full season, though, so at least we're being aggressive with a guy. (For the defination of not aggressive, see Cole, Gerrit.)

Whats the odds that Appel (if signed) could visit WV Power?

    Re: Pirates Top Prospects 2012

The way we've moved prospects in the last few years, probably pretty good.

In all likelyhood, though, it wouldn't be until next season.

    Luis Heredia, State College Debut: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

Not too shabby for a 17 year old.

    Gerrit Cole, Double A Debut: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K.

Impressive. He's still behind Bauer, but if he can build on this, we'll see him in Pittsburgh early next year.

    Re: Pirates Top Prospects 2012

Pirates pitching prospect Gerrit Cole left Tuesday's start at Double-A Altoona after taking a line drive off his neck.
Yikes. Cole actually stayed in the game initially and even had another liner hit him in the glove. He was removed after the inning, though, and reportedly looked a little woozy in the dugout. An update on his status should be available later Tuesday.
    Ouch!!
