    Attention! Big extension for Tabata?

Hasn't played a full season yet, but he's close to a 6 year deal. 6 years!

He's not a bad player but what screams we need to invest that much into a guy? Shouldn't that kinda deal be for McCutchon?

Pittsburgh Pirates, Jose Tabata near six-year extension, source says - ESPN

I would hope they're talking to McCutchton as well but they shouldn't put all other deals on hold just because they haven't extended McCutchton yet.

That being said, I do share the confusion for extending someone who hasn't even played a full season yet.

I can see an extension for Tabata because I don't see the dollar amount ever being that high for Tabata. That said, I would wait a year or two before extending Tabata as injuries have plagued him all season. McCutchen will probably get a Longoria-type extension.

This won't even be an issue when they build a statue of him next to Clemente.... right?

There doesn't need to ever be a Ta-ba-Ta statue.

Looks like they got a deal done.
The guaranteed portion of the deal runs through 2016 and includes contract restructuring for 2011. Tabata will receive a $1MM signing bonus, and his 2011 salary increases to $500K. He will then earn $750K in 2012, $1MM in 2013, $3MM in 2014, $4MM in 2015, and $4.5MM in 2016. That puts the guarantee at $14.75MM, and the value of the three option years at $22.5MM combined.
Not a bad deal for either side here.

Tabata has a fractured wrist and his season is done.

He slumped too right after this deal. Oh well, it's not a salary albatross. I just dint think he was worth jumping the gun so early. Too many injuries and a sketchy past..

Tabata was actually playing well after his return from the DL but I agree, it was too early. Alex Presley has looked really good so I saw no need to jump the gun as you put it.
