    Pirates Pirates Ink Overbay

The Pirates signed first baseman Lyle Overbay to a one-year deal, the team announced. The statement from GM Neal Huntington:

"Lyle Overbay is solid major league player and we expect him to have a positive impact on our club offensively, defensively, and in the clubhouse."
I like this signing for the Bucs if the money is right. Overbay still has a good glove and some pop. He's a doubles machine since becoming a starter and has 15-20 HR power. This should also move Garrett Jones to RF where he plays and hits better and will also platoon with Diaz. This is the perfect place for Overbay to bounce back after a bad year (.763 OPS) so I like this move for the Pirates. It should bring some stability to first base.

    sweet move!

    Another retread.

Free Agency has been thoroughly battered and raped by the Pirates organization. Can't wait for this exciting new season to begin.

The Pirates pitching staff stacks up so well against the NLs elite.

    in no particular order
    1. Paul Maholm
    2. Charlie Morton
    3. Kevin Correia
    4. Ross Ohlendorf
    5. James Mcdonald

    compared to

    1. Halladay
    2. Lee
    3. Hamels
    4. Oswalt
    5. Blanton

The question maybe of the new decade of baseball is..which rotation will go down as the best of all time?

The addition of Kevin Correia to the rotation was the greatest signing not only in franchise history, but in ML history. How demi-god Neil Huntington was able to pull him off for 4 million...WOW!

Bucs get bopper for first, ink free agent Overbay
The Pirates heated up the Hot Stove on Tuesday, signing left-handed-hitting Lyle Overbay to a one-year deal to fill a void at first base while securing a strong clubhouse presence. More »
    THE PR! IT BEGINS!

I'm surprised this move wasnt taking up 40 minutes of Favrecenters time today. HUGE signing for the Pirates.

THE HOT STOVE IS ON FIREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The only bad signing was Correia.

So far, who knows? They will get more production from RF and with Overbay at first, the infield defense should improve.

How much did they save? Were they supposed to pocket more money? They definitely have improved on last year's team so its a good start. They're not done yet. Any improvement is a good thing. I forgot to mention a new manager who can definitely help the young guys in the hitting department. Its not like anyone else in the division has done much.

    How have they improved?

    The question. It was loaded.

Do you think the Pirates additions outweigh the other teams in the division who have not "done much"?

I've already explained how they have improved. Your other question doesn't make much sense.

    Re: Pirates Ink Overbay

Sabu, just imagine this move happened maybe 8 or so years ago and then maybe you can feel excited about bringing in Overbay & Correia.

Anyway, I tend to agree with both of you partly. Yes, Overbay has the potential to help this club out and it wouldn't be crazy to see him hit a load of doubles, 15-25 homers, and be a positive force in the lineup. On the otherhand, when past and future has been so bleak looking for this organization, moves like this are obviously not game-changers and it ends up being the same story year over year, just new names attached. The Reds went through this same thing of bringing in someone past their prime, acting as if their veteran presence would turn a group of rotting vegetables into fresh, and when that failed 9 months later, they did the same thing but with someone new.

Hopefully for the Pirates they can capitalize on any resurgence by Overbay and trade him for a nice B prospect or two at the deadline.
