Pirates Are you serious?: Capps Nontendered

I know I'm kind of breaking my own rule here, but we'll deal with it.

    Pirates non-tender RHP Matt Capps.

Then they were just bluffing all along: the Pirates had no intention of gambling $3 million or so on a comeback season from Capps, but they were hoping to trade him. A smarter team will pick him now and likely get quality results from him. He was still throwing as hard as ever last season, and he's a 26-year-old with a career 3.61 ERA in 271 2/3 innings. There should be considerable demand for his services, and the Pirates will probably end up spending their $3 million to land a worse closer
Really? At the very worst they could've arbed him and got a marginal prospect out of him. I mean, Capps really wasn't good at all last year, but a 26 year old reliever with a good to great arm.

    *sigh*

Maybe it works out, but for now, I'm a tad upset with this move.

I won't claim to be an expert on Capps, but it seems to be a little quick to give up on someone who at times in the past showed such great stuff. Maybe the Pirates' scouting is that right, or maybe they should loosen their purse strings a bit more. At worst, they would have gambled and lost but traded him and C. Ash to another team wanting to take another gamble.

MLB.com is saying that he's deciding between offers from the Cubs and Natinals. This shouldn't even be close. Don't make the wrong move, Fat Matt.

He gets to choose from a chance to close and a chance to win. Sounds like a nice decision to have to me...

It would be nice to have another arm in our pen. Hopefully he makes a decision soon. Either one would be good, like Witlon said, a chance to close or a chance to win (well, if the players play up to their ability, unlike last year).

Ok, so the Nats were too cheap to keep Joe Beimel's $2 million salary for the entire year, but they give $3.5 million to Capps, who isn't even close to being as reliable. That makes sense.
