Pirates increase offer to Sano, but no counter

The Pirates early last week made a "substantially increased" offer to sign elite Dominican prospect Miguel Angel Sano, according to a team source, but it expired at midnight Saturday without a counter.

Neither side would divulge the amount of the offer.

Sano, a shortstop who projects to switch to the outfield, is perhaps the best of the 16-year-old class of international amateur talent that Major League Baseball teams could sign beginning July 2.
The Pirates are thought to be the only team to make an official offer to Sano. Sano says he's 16, the Pirates says 16 - 17 after their investigation, and MLB says "undetermined" after their own investigation. That seems to be scaring off other teams. He should probably just sign with the Pirates already.
