Vazquez, Pirates Agree On Deal

The Pittsburgh Pirates are on the verge of a two-year, $4 million deal with infielder Ramon Vazquez.

Vazquez hit a career-high .290 with a .365 on-base percentage with the Texas Rangers last season.

A left-handed hitter and utility infielder, Vazquez has a career .257 batting average in eight major league seasons spent with the Rangers, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.

Vazquez is 32 and coming off a career year with the Rangers. I guess the Pirates were suckers thinking he can play like he did last year all the time. Vazquez will play third for now but if they move Sanchez or Wilson, things could change.

What a terrible deal. A player who has never been good enough to stick around for the whole season, a true AAAA, has a career year and gets what would be a huge payday for his level of skill. He fell off the map in the second half and of course he had a higher OPS in Arlington than away from it.

The Pirates are going to regret this one.
