NEW YORK (Ticker) - Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jason Bay on Monday was named National League Player of the Month for May.

A 2005 All-Star, Bay set a club record for the month with 12 homers - including at least one in six straight games from May 22-28 - and tied for the NL lead with 35 RBI.

Bay, who batted .321 (35-for-109) with a .688 slugging percentage and .402 on-base percentage, became the first Pirate to win the award since Barry Bonds in September 1992.

Other candidates included Los Angeles' Nomar Garciaparra, Philadelphia's Ryan Howard, Arizona's Eric Byrnes, Florida's Miguel Cabrera, Colorado's Matt Holliday, Washington's Alfonso Soriano and St. Louis' Albert Pujols, who won the April award.
