The Phillies did make another addition Wednesday, albeit a minor one. Journeyman reliever Julio Santana signed a one-year deal worth $800,000 with the Phillies after going 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 42 innings for the Brewers last season. The 31-year-old right-hander projects as a sixth- or seventh-inning option in the bullpen.

Of course, Gillick would rather find enough starting pitching to make any reliever slated to pitch before the eighth inning a seldom-needed reliever.

The chatter that has made its way through the rumor circles is that the Phillies have been willing to talk turkey and offer just about anyone in their quest for a hammer to complement Jon Lieber and Brett Myers at the top of the rotation.

Essentially, it comes down to this: The only three players Gillick considers extremely unlikely to go are first baseman Ryan Howard, second baseman Chase Utley and shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Obviously, it would be counterproductive to deal Lieber or Myers, so they also fit in the "going nowhere" list. And although Cory Lidle might not be in the same category as Lieber and Myers, it’s tough to fathom his value on the trade market superceding his worth to the Phillies as a dependable and healthy member of the rotation. As for the farm system, each and every minor-league prospect -- yes, including southpaw Cole Hamels and right-hander Gavin Floyd -- are fair game.
Says they may go after Zito, Schmidt, or Vazquez
