Phillies Madson signs 4 yr/$44 million deal

Phillies, Madson Nearing Four-Year Deal : MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

It's a definite overpay but the Phillies don't forfeit any draft picks in getting a closer which is huge for a franchise whose farm system took a mighty hit in the Pence trade. They kept the guy they wanted all along and both sides should be happy.

Hold that thought, apparently this isn't done yet. And the Phillies had been talking to Papelbon as recently as Monday.

Looks like this deal might never happen and the Phillies have turned their attention towards Papelbon. Looks like the executives would not sign off on the deal. Weird! I thought defacto GM's and actually GM's had last say??

Newsflash: Just because the GM or President has final say on trades and signings doesn't mean the owner can't veto the transactions. Even Theo Epstein must get permission to spend his boss's money.

It goes without saying that there is no deal if the owner or CEO refuses to sign off on it. This applies to even the decisions of the President of Baseball Operations with his shiny final say.

No, it's just that the owner/CEO rarely intervenes in baseball decisions that we're able to say the GM has the final say. Why else would we blame the GM when a trade or signing blows up in the team's face?

It's the same as coaches being fired for having a lack of talent. They are lower on the totem pole. Plus CEO's have stake in the franchise and aren't going to fire themselves. Executives always have the final say, GM's and defacto GM's never do!

So if Neukom or Baer has the final say in that he has the power to veto any move Sabean makes, why not blame the exec for every bad move that he didn't stop from happening?

Because the exec leaves the baseball decisions to the GM.

except in Chicago where the GM is just a figure head and the president of baseball operations is the de facto GM.

Re: Madson signs 4 yr/$44 million deal

It's not "if" an executive has the power to veto any move, they do! Executives do trust their GM's to make the right moves and they do sign off on any move a GM makes. If they didn't trust their GM's, then they would be gone. You can try and keep wording it as many different ways as you like but you are still wrong. GM's do not have the last say! This thread should have proved that by now but I guess that would be asking too much.

And FYI, Neukom is gone and the Giants executives have gotten plenty of criticism for keeping Sabean.

Of course he's the de facto GM when he controls player personnel in effect like every other GM in the league does.

Then you should be taking this argument to the Cubs fans who insist that Epstein has the final say, even though it's technically not final until Ricketts says so.
