    Phillies Hamels Sprains Ankle

Cole Hamels left his start Tuesday in the fifth inning with an ankle injury sustained fielding a bunt.
The goods news is that he had thrown 4 1/3 scoreless innings before departing. Hopefully, this is just another minor injury. He was starting tonight after leaving his outing last week with a bruised left shoulder.
This just isn't his year so far. First it was elbow trouble in the spring, then the line drive off the should and now this? Whose Cheerios did he piss in? Hopefully he can make his next start but it depends on the severity on the sprain.

Hamels has not had the season he had hoped for, thusfar. He may turn things around. Maybe a trip to the DL would be good for him, allowing him to clear his mind and get back to pitching.

Apparently it was just a mild strain and still on track to make his next start. I agree some time off could do him some good.

The guy has always been injury prone (until like last year or 2 years ago), and while the last couple haven't been worrisome, the guy pitched almost 90 innings more than his previous high last year. The Verducci effect says he's going to be hurt or ineffective for a good part of the year.

These aren't injuries that go towards the Verducci effect. Liners off the shoulder and sprained ankles are fluke injuries. Verducci effect is hit or miss anyway.

The elbow problem is Verducci effect. Also, he's always had shoulder and elbow problems anyway. The guy is not unlikely to break down this year.

The elbow problem is definitely a concern and why I have the Phillies missing the playoffs. Its just that he isn't getting a chance to prove his elbow is healthy with all these fluke injuries. Crazy season so far. Next thing you know he will get hit in the head by a bat for drinking Jobu's rum.

The other thing, is you don't want him pitching with a bad ankle, because if he compensated, he could mess up his elbow worse.

Exactly why I agreed with catman in saying some time off would do him good.

And I agree as well. Just saying that Hamels is prone to be injured worse at some point this year.

Because of a rain out, Hamels got to skip a start and is on track to pitch Friday.
