PHILLIES 11, PIRATES 10
at Bradenton, Fla.
Tuesday, March 6

Phillies at the plate: Ahead in the count in the third inning, Ryan Howard drove a fastball into the gap in right-center to knock in a pair of runs, which gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead. They had turned a one-out walk, a stolen base and a single into their first run an inning earlier. Second baseman Brent Abernathy knocked in that run. But it was a six-run fifth that sealed the ballgame for the Phillies. Catcher Rod Barajas doubled to knock in three of those six runs. Brennan King's single in the 10th drove home two runs and broke in a 9-9 game.

Pirates at the plate: Outfielder Luis Matos knocked in a pair of runs with a one-out double in the sixth. He was responsible for the team's first runs. With a triple, shortstop Brian Bixler knocked in a run in the seventh. In the bottom of the ninth, Bixler led off with a double. The Pirates took advantage of sloppy Philly defense to score five runs [four unearned] to tie the game in ninth. Nate McLouth's RBI single knocked in the tying run.

Phillies on the mound: Jamie Moyer, making his second start of the Grapefruit League season, walked the bases loaded in the third inning, but the crafty lefty worked out of that jam. He finished his three-inning outing with a line that read: no runs, one hit, three walks.

Pirates on the mound: Right-hander Ian Snell, rounding into Opening Day shape, had his moments. In three innings of work, Snell struck out seven, but he also walked a pair. Both of those walks led to runs for Philadelphia. Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny took over for Snell and struggled with his control. In 1 2/3 innings, he walked five. Gorzelanny gave up six runs [five earned.]

Grapefruit League records: Phillies 3-3; Pirates 0-4-1.

Up next: Right-hander Tony Armas Jr. will start Wednesday for the Pirates, who travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to play the Twins. Armas will face right-hander Boof Bonser in a game that will start a 1:05 p.m. ET. For the Phillies, they take on the Toronto Blue Jays. Right-hander Brett Myers will start, and he will face Blue Jays left-hander Gustavo Chacin.
