Yankees Cashman didn't recommend the Soriano deal

It's not baseball until we have some tiny ounce of drama with the Empire, even though everyone is downplaying that there's a rift of some sort. That's cool.

New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman admits he was against Rafael Soriano deal - ESPN New York

Cashman felt he needed to be honest with how he felt about the move because he had made it known to many members of the media that he didn't think it would be wise to pay so much for an eighth-inning guy. The Yankees have had bad experiences with multiyear deals for Steve Karsay and Kyle Farnsworth, among others.

This was pretty obvious from the get go but I dont think it will be a big deal. Ownership and front offices will have disagreements in any business, and 99% of the time the guy who pays the bills wins

Nothing to see here until the day comes that the Yanks actually dont sign someone because "they don't have the budget" for it.

Cashman should have held strong and not agreed to any of it. What's the worst that could happen? He gets fired? Cashman would have no trouble finding another GM job. You just don;t pay setup men that kind of money while giving up draft picks to a division rival with a great history of scouting and player development.

Yea because its a great idea to defy your billionare boss and get fired as GM of the Yankees over the signing of a set up man. Great idea.

Steinbrenner or whoever called the shot wanted to have an investment in place to be the "closer in waiting". Mo isnt getting any younger and you want Joba's chubby arm being the only legitimate threat back there?

Yes, actually it is a great idea. You honestly think the Steinbrenners would have fired him over standing his ground over a setup man? A setup man who is overpaid and costs draft picks at that? It goes both ways. Plus like I said, Cashman would have no problem getting a job and would probably be relieved to get out of NY someday.

Soriano can opt out after year one or year two. Not much of an investment

Yup, just like how Paul DePodesta defied Frank McCourt by blowing off a dinner/interview with Tommy Lasorda-backed managerial candidate Orel Hershiser and got fired four days later as GM of the Dodgers. Of course the DePo zealots refuse to fault him for pulling off that crap.
